JAMES ALEXANDER CROOKS
He will be deeply missed by his two daughters, Susan (Tim) Poseluzney and Nancy (Richard) Ito, one granddaughter Samantha Vlahos and two great-grandchildren, Dean and Yanna. He will also be lovingly remembered by many other relatives and close friends.
Jim was born in Winnipeg in 1933. He was a proud North End boy, often speaking fondly about growing up on Lansdowne Avenue. He graduated from Tec Voc High School where he met Audrey, the love of his life. They were married in Christ Lutheran Church and shared a long and happy life together.
He started his career with the Manitoba Telephone System and later took a position with Salisbury House. From there he went to work for the Provincial Government, starting in the Department of Agriculture, ultimately retiring from the Department of Finance. He was also a professional photographer, ran his own home renovation business and did consulting work for numerous organizations.
Jim and Audrey spent a great deal of time at Sandy Hook on the shores of Lake Winnipeg. He built their first cottage on Ninth Avenue and later did a major renovation of their second one on the lakefront. They spent many happy summers there, often hosting family and friends for dinners and parties.
He was a Past Master of the Ancient Landmark Lodge. He was also a member of the Khartum Temple of the Shrine, first in the Drum and Bugle Corps and later as a founding member of the Kamera Klub. He was very proud of being named an Honorary Life Member of both organizations where he formed many long lasting friendships.
He was a proud Scot and thoroughly enjoyed his time with the Scottish Pavilion at Folklorama, later serving on the Folk Arts Council. He was President of the Heather Belle Ladies Pipe Band and dedicated countless hours to a wide range of community organizations.
Above all, he was a devoted family man. His wife and children came first. He set a wonderful example for his daughters and they will miss his calm wisdom, his loving presence and even his bad jokes.
Despite recent health problems, he enjoyed his years at Devonshire House where he made new friends and reconnected with a few old ones. He spent his last days at Kildonan Personal Care Centre and his family is grateful to all the staff for their kind and compassionate care.
According to his wishes, cremation has already taken place. A private family interment will take place later this summer.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Grace Lutheran Church would be greatly appreciated.

What can I say about this man who was my boss, mentor, father figure, friend. He was one of the best HR professionals in the Manitoba government, who understood we were there to serve people, not dominate them. His management and leadership were superb! He was such a great motivator of his staff, always encouraging and supporting them. His sense of humour was well known as were his ongoing stories of growing up in the north end.
