SOPHIE WALKER
(nee HUCULAK)
February 13, 1928 – June 19, 2020

With deep sadness, we announce that our beloved Mom, Nana and Great-Nana, Sophie Walker, peacefully passed away in her sleep at home on Friday, June 19, 2020 at the age of 92.
Sophie will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter Dorothy Bird, (grandsons, Scott Bird (Liz) (great-granddaughter Charlotte) and Brett Bird); son Brad Walker (Brenda); (grandchildren, Zoey Walker, Jordan Constantino (Rina) (great-grandson King), Hope Patrick (Anthony) (great-granddaughter Ellie May) and Haley Kwiatek); and son Keith Walker (Marnie) (granddaughters, Camryn and Chloe).
Sophie was predeceased by her son Kirk Walker and husband Douglas Walker as well as several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her sisters, Dorothy Longmuir (Grandview, MB) and Margaret Wallberg (Victoria, BC) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Sophie was born and raised in Rorketon, Manitoba. After graduating from high school, she taught school on a permit at the age of 17. After a year, she decided to move to Winnipeg and attend Success Business College. She then worked at Eaton's Mail Order until her marriage. Although there were other office jobs over the years, Sophie's main focus was always on her family.
Sophie was a generous, kind and loving person who always saw the best in people and put others ahead of herself. When she was a hospital patient, she would be worrying about whether her visitors were tired or had eaten, etc.
Despite several health issues over the past few years, Sophie retained her pleasant disposition and sense of humour. Even after suffering a stroke that severely impacted her ability to speak, she was grateful that she was not paralyzed and could remain independent. She loved cooking, baking, reading, spending time with family and using her iPhone to text and play "Words With Friends."
Sophie was a wonderful mother and nana who taught her children and grandchildren so many important life lessons, just by the way she lived her own life. We are all very grateful for having had her in our lives and will cherish her memory forever.
Since her husband Doug passed away in 2015, Sophie was heartbroken over losing her best friend and the love of her life. There is some comfort in knowing that they are now reunited.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private memorial service will be held for immediate family only.
