IRENE MARTHA JACOB

It is with deep sadness, that we announce the passing of our mother Irene Jacob on April 28, 2020, at St. Boniface Hospital, at the age of 84.
Mom was born March 10, 1936 in Beuthen, Germany and as a child lived through the turmoil that was the Second World War in Germany.
Irene is survived by children, Marianne Jacob, Rosemarie (Albert) Overwater, David and Michael Jacob, 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Irene is also survived by siblings, Gisela (Helmut) Krampitz, Wilhelm (Edelgard) Krzuk, Ingrid (Frank) Pezzolla, Karin (Simon) Ungarian. Irene was predeceased by Gunter Jacob, brother Dieter Krzuk and sister Anneliese Brohl.
Mom will be missed by her good friend Doreen Stanfield
At age 17 Mom immigrated with her family to Winnipeg. After a few years the family acquired a grocery store on Notre Dame and Home Street, where Irene and her siblings worked to help her parents. Irene also volunteered at old Grace Hospital as a "candy striper". Irene and her siblings loved to go dancing at the German Club Saturday nights and there she met Gunter, who would become her husband in December 1956. Together they had four children and while Gunter worked at masonry, Irene stayed home to raise their children. Once her two daughters married and moved on their own adventures, Irene moved with Gunter, David and Michael to Nanaimo to start a new adventure. After some years on the island mom started feeling homesick, which led her to move back to Winnipeg to be near her siblings and families.
Mom would love to crotchet neck warmers, hats, and lappens (dish clothes). You would never leave mom's home empty handed.
Mom will be sorely missed by those who knew her.

We love you Mom and will miss you.

Because of the Covid virus a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Condolences on the passing of Irene. My late Father was also born in Beuthen (in 1931) and luckily his oarenys left Beuthen, ultimately for Palestine via Amsterdam, in 1932. He was lucky and I am here today as a result, other relatives were not so lucky..I visited Bytom in 2013 and it is sadly polluted now. - Posted by: Gregor Stone (Steinhauer) (no relationship) on: Jan 16, 2021

  • Never an unkind word. Irene always made you feel welcome. She loved her family. And her ginger ale! - Posted by: Tracy (Friend) on: Jul 06, 2020
