SHIRLEY ARSENAULT
(nee LASCHUK)
February 27, 1941 - June 26, 2020
Shirley is survived by her husband of 59 years, Preston; her son Darren (Tess); daughters, Cynthia and Chari; her brother Brian; her grandchildren, Dillon and Kaitlyn; many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended and step family members.
She is predeceased by her brother Allan (1943); her mother Elsie Laschuk (1973) and her father Peter Laschuk (1991), (Olga) 2010.
Shirley grew up in Winnipeg with her parents, Elsie and Peter Laschuk and brother Brian. Her childhood was spent visiting family and cousins in Cooks Creek, Otterburne and Winnipeg. She was very involved in figure skating, volleyball and basketball. In 1958 to 1959, she earned the Miles MacDonell Collegiate Female Athlete of the Year award.
She joined the military in 1959, and after boot camp in Quebec, she was stationed in Edmonton, where she met this blond haired guy (Satch) who could skate and play volleyball. OH la la! She gave up her own military career as she became a military wife and mother. Her and Preston travelled the world with their children, all across Europe while stationed in Germany and all across Canada from coast to coast, while stationed, in Barrie, Winnipeg, Portage La Prairie and Kingston.
Shirley loved being a mother and a homemaker, where she excelled in cooking; gardening; sewing; knitting; and decorating. She had a love of animals and nature and continued her involvement of sports with skating, sking, curling, golf and hiking. She loved to sing and the house was always filled with music.
When living in Sperling, she was able to host big family dinners, where she became famous in the family for "Shirley's Buns" and putting on elaborate birthday parties with amazing homemade birthday cakes.
In the later years she enjoyed going to Alberta to visit her grandchildren and cousins, as well as picnics at Birds Hill Park and going to every figure skating and musical shows that came to Winnipeg.
The family would like to thank all the caring and wonderful staff at WRHA, Beaconhill Lodge and Concordia Place. This has been a very difficult journey and all your support has been very helpful.
In accordance with Shirley's wishes, the immediate family will gather at a later date to honour Shirley's memory.
If you wish, you can make a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba in her memory.
