DAVID M. SHEWCHUK
In addition to Kathy, David leaves behind brother John (Eleanor), brother Gerry (Casey), sister Terri-Anne and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Anne Shewchuk.
David was born and raised in Winnipeg's North End. During his youth, he enjoyed playing organized sports, especially hockey and baseball. His fondest memories of those years involved being a member of CUAC's 1966 and 1967 City and Provincial Champion Midget and Juvenile hockey teams.
David joined the RCMP in 1971. His first posting was to Rocky Mountain House, Alberta and as his career progressed, further postings to Red Deer and Boyle, Alberta, followed. In 1981, David was posted to the Edmonton Commercial Crime Section where he became a respected Economic Crime Investigator. In 1990, David received his commission to the rank of Inspector with postings to the Toronto Commercial Crime Branch, as Detective Inspector, to London, Ontario, "O" Division HQ as first, a Planning Officer, and then as Officer-in-Charge of the Criminal Intelligence Branch. His final Ontario posting was as Officer-in-Charge of the Niagara Regional RCMP Detachment. In 2000, he was promoted directly to the rank of Chief Superintendent and was appointed as the Regional Crime Officer for the Northwest Canada Region being stationed in Calgary. In 2004, David received his favourite and final posting as Commanding Officer of "M" Division, Whitehorse, Yukon, where he served until his retirement in 2007.
While being an active police officer, on his own time and initiative, David furthered his education earning a Business Administration Diploma, a Bachelor of General Studies Degree and a Certified Professional Accountant (C.P.A.) designation.
David was known as an easy going and jovial person. He was well liked and respected by all who had occasion to know him, whether at work or play. For David, though, the RCMP was much more than a career; it fulfilled a calling. If one could say that a police officer could be a "company man" than this was David, who was fiercely proud of the RCMP organization and all of the members with whom he served. The professionalism, integrity, honesty and honour with which he served was, for David, a lasting and fitting tribute to the ideals of the RCMP family he loved and served so well. Following in his footsteps, his brother, Gerry, niece Jaren and nephew Kaid became members of the RCMP.
Without hesitation, however, David would say that his greatest joy in life was the love, companionship and support of his wife Kathy. Always together, they shared a love of travel, experiencing many trips throughout Europe, the Caribbean, the South Pacific and the American Southwest. Upon David's retiring, they had a home built at the Crown Isle Golf Resort in Courtenay, BC where they enjoyed many happy years. Amongst their other interests, they particularly shared a love of animals of all sorts, but most especially for their beloved dogs, Samantha, Molly, Andy and Murphy.

It is always a shock when a member and friend while we were stationed in Red Deer in the 1970s passes. Dave and I shared a number of adventures together in Red Deer and as time passed us by we went our separate ways in the Force. His hardy laugh still rings true in my mind. My heartfelt condolences to Kathy. - Posted by: Dr. R.G. (Rod) Martin (Friend and Former co-worker) on: Aug 19, 2020

Please accept our deepest sympathy for the loss of your husband. I had the pleasure of working with Dave (C/Supt. Shewchuk) for a number of years when he was stationed in "O" Division. Dave exemplified the very best of the RCMP and was a role model to so many members. As a mentor and a friend, he will be missed. Sorry to hear of Dave's passing. We were troop mates in Regina. When we progressed to the two man dorms Dave and I shared a room. We respected each other and graduated with the utmost of pride. - Posted by: Doug Carruthers (Troop mate) on: Aug 04, 2020

David was my cousin, the son of my mother's youngest brother, who was also the godfather of my nephew. He was a good man, a kind soul, and a childhood friend. I hadn't seen him in many years but always remember him as a good guy, one who left positive feelings for all who knew him. Rest comfortably, David. Love you. - Posted by: Marcia Hoch (first cousin) on: Aug 03, 2020

Dave was an absolute great guy to work with. His work ethics were above reproach. Knowledge superior and he assisted all on the section when needed. All though only a Cpl. at the time it pleases me to no end that each and every individual within our section represented the RCMP so well and became something within the force and private life. My condolences to his wife and family. - Posted by: cam marks (co-worker Edmonton RCMP Commercial Crime) on: Aug 03, 2020

I first met Dave in 2003 - a regret being that I had not met him earlier. A definitive gentleman and a truly dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He exemplified all that is good about the Force. - Posted by: John Francis Henderson (Friend and work colleague.) on: Aug 03, 2020

We have been neighbors of Dave and Kathy for 10 years. During this time our Friday group have enjoyed many lunches together at a variety of establishments. Dave and Kathy have been just wonderful neighbors throughout all this time, and it was just devastating when we found out about Dave's illness. Dave put up a good fight right to the end. We miss him and will not forget him. - Posted by: Lloyd and Beulah Heath (Neighbor) on: Aug 03, 2020

I worked closely with Dave after retirement. He was Treasurer of the Central Vancouver Island R.C.M.P. Veteran's Association, and I was President. He was a quiet and thoughtful individual, very well skilled as our Treasurer. His friendship was of great value to me, and I will miss him. My sincere condolences to his family and may he rest peacefully. - Posted by: George D. Kilvington, C.M. (Friend & colleague, R.C.M.P., Retired) on: Aug 01, 2020

I only came to have the pleasure to meet and know David in recent years when I joined the CVI Vets. He presented himself as a true gentleman which he was. My deepest sympathy goes out to his wife and family for their loss. He will be missed by many. - Posted by: Chris Bomford (Friend) on: Aug 01, 2020
