MARLO COOLEY
August 12, 1974 - July 31, 2020

Suddenly, on July 31, due to medical complications, we lost our beloved Marlo.
She will be greatly missed by her mom Marge Winiarz (Noel), her brother Ryan (Alli), her grandmother Angela Winiarz and by her beautiful son Nathan, the love of her life. She also leaves to mourn her passing Nathan's dad Mike, Grammie Louise Reid, Uncle David, and Aunties, Kim and Jennifer.
Growing up, Marlo was very close to her extended Winiarz family in Winnipeg and Calgary, and will be missed by her Auntie Jennifer (Mike), Uncle Ger, cousin Bianca, Auntie Patti (Elliott), and her many dear cousins and friends, both in Winnipeg and in Halifax. She especially had a very close relationship while growing up with her grandparents, Angela and Elmer Winiarz and with her great-aunts, Rose and Bertha. With their mom and all the relatives, Marlo and her brother Ryan spent many happy hours at the family cabin at Hillside Beach. Marlo went to school in Winnipeg and maintained some lifelong friendships over the years with Theresa and Kellea and others from St. Alphonsus School days and from J.H. Bruns, from where she graduated high school.
Marlo loved helping others and was always seeking fairness and social justice for others, especially for women. In her 20s, she trained as a volunteer for Klinic in Winnipeg, and later worked as a team member as well as helping out at the Women's Clinic. When she moved to Halifax, to be near the ocean, she began palliative care work. Marlo loved cooking and would create cool dishes to share with others. Marlo loved nature and hiking and always marvelled at the beauty of flowers , trees in bloom and collecting rocks, a passion she shared with her son Nate. She would often take him near the ocean and to parks to enjoy, to explore and to appreciate. Point Pleasant Park and the Public Gardens in Halifax were their favourites. Marlo was a wonderful hands-on mother to Nathan, her Nateyboo, as she called him. He thrived as a toddler and a young boy and they always shared great conversations, sang favourite songs and did arts and crafts projects together.

Marlo's bright light is no longer,
but her love, her passion and her shining
spirit will always be with us in our hearts.
Love you forever my precious daughter.

A private celebration of Marlo's life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Palliative Care program at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg or at the QE2 in Halifax or to a donation of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (15 entries)

  • I regret that this happened! She found me herself, I'm from Ukraine. We are family, she told me that, but she never said anything about it again, we communicated through google translator, she was mysterious and didn't say anything about herself. Anne just wanted to communicate, she told me that she would meet, but it never happened, in 2020 communication stopped unexpectedly. I never understood what happened. I learned about it today, I came to Winnipeg from Ukraine and saw an inscription on the bench about her, it's a pity that we never met! - Posted by: Nazarii (Yes) on: Aug 30, 2023

  • Marlo, I was so sad to hear of your passing especially since we managed to reconnect after all these years. G-d speed my friend. - Posted by: Shira Brown (Friend ) on: Jul 24, 2022

  • Marlo made an impact on so many people during her time in Halifax. She was good at evoking strong emotions from people and she will be remembered by many for her special brand of uniqueness. - Posted by: Clara (Acquaintance ) on: Jun 25, 2022

  • I just now searched Marlo’s name after just over a year of being in contact. I’m blown away and broken hearted. I met Marlo at an open mic and she encouraged me to sing. We met up regularly after that for walks in the park and later sand with Feist as part of the Big Sing. She was a quirky, free spirit. She called me her Allium, one of her favourite flowers. I trust Mike will take good care of Nate. I can’t imagine his life without his mom! So sorry everybody for this loss! - Posted by: Kenova (Partner/friend 2018 to 2020) on: Jul 23, 2021

  • Marlo came to live with me in Halifax and stayed for about a year. I came to know her very well during this time. I am sorry for this loss to her family. - Posted by: Carl (former partner/roommate) on: Jun 06, 2021

  • I was heartbroken to hear about Marlo's passing. She was an amazing, beautiful, creative, loving, smart and sensitive woman, and although we had not spoken for years, I've always loved her dearly. I wish I had made contact with her, to tell her how much she's always meant to me, but we don't always get a tomorrow. My heartfelt deepest condolences to Nathan, Marge, Noel, and Ryan. My thoughts are with you, and I hope you're all beginning to heal. Please take good care of yourselves. Marlo loved deeply and saw beauty in everyone and everything around her. She was passionate, and followed her heart, and the best meals and conversations I've had were those we shared during our friendship. Hours together seemed like minutes, and I will always cherish each moment. - Posted by: laura flewin-hilton (friend) on: Oct 24, 2020

  • I was terribly shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Marlo. My heart goes out to all of her family and friends. I grew up living in the same area as the Cooley family and was often at their place...the years get behind us and times change but memories remain. I was a great friend of her brother Ryan and I can remember the goofing around that ensued with Marlo at times. Especially tough to hear the news as we are the same age and it just seems wrong. So very sorry to Marge and Ryan-and her young son. - Posted by: Scott Bowles (Family friend) on: Sep 23, 2020

  • Dear Marge, Remembering Ryan and Marlo as children, I am deeply saddened for your loss of Marlo. I have vivid memories of her vivaciousness and sparkly personality as a child. May you know in the aching of your heart, the love and consolation of God, the Father. May she rest in peace. My love, prayers and thoughts wing their way to you. - Posted by: Frances Everett (University friend of Marge) on: Sep 03, 2020

  • A few weeks ago, Marlo drop over to make a meal for me. As she was walking across the parking lot my heart was filled with an amazing amount of joy just to see her. I have always felt that way about Marlo during our relationship. I never need anything from her, when I was near her nothing else mattered. I loved her unconditional and it’s a love that I will take to my grave. Last week I talked to a cab driver who had known Marlo for a very short period of time. When I told him that she had died, he was devasted. I was blown away by the impact that Marlo had on him in such a short period of time. That speaks volumes to the very core of who Marlo was as a person. How many people do you know leaves that kind of impression on others? - Posted by: Derek Spencer (Partner) on: Aug 14, 2020

  • My sincerest of condolences to Marg (Noel), Ryan and closest family members to Marlo. My deepest of sympathies to Nate for the loss of his mother. Marlo was a light unto her own and showed her virtue through her interests in flowers, nature’s beauty and pieces from antiquity. I will remember her for the warmth she extolled to those around her in her brightest of moments. Rest Well Marlo. - Posted by: Shad Sinclair (School Friend ) on: Aug 12, 2020

  • So very sorry and sad to hear of Marlo's passing. Although we did not know Marlo, we do know and love the Winiarz family. We will pray for her and her family. - Posted by: Ken and Gale Koury (Mike and Jennifer's parents) (Close friends of the family) on: Aug 09, 2020

  • Marlo was certainly one of a kind. I can honestly say I’ve never met anyone like her. What I’ll remember is the passion, laughter, food, music, and love of nature. Her life was tragically too short, but she sure packed it full of experience and emotion. I’m happy she’s home now. - Posted by: ravinder bains (Friend ) on: Aug 08, 2020

  • Marlo lived passionately, loved furiously and charted her own course in this life. We were blessed to have her light with us for her 46 years and she will be missed by many that loved her, especially her son Nathan. Rest in peace dear niece. - Posted by: Jennifer Koury (Aunt) on: Aug 08, 2020
