SUSAN JAMIESON MORRISON
(née GALLOWAY)
June 1, 1930 - August 4, 2020

With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Mom and Granny at Tuxedo Villa, Winnipeg, at the age of 90, after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's.
Susan is predeceased by her husband Bill and brothers, Jimmy and William. She will be dearly missed by daughter Fiona and son-in-law Mel, grandchildren, Lauren (Simon) and Nathan (Michelle), who were her pride and joy, beloved great-grandchildren, Harvey and Frances, as well as a large extended family and many friends.
Born in Glasgow, Susan immigrated to Canada with Bill and Fiona in the late 1950s, along with her brother William's family, braving the struggles of a new country and climate by sharing everything. Susan loved her Galloway clan "back home" in Scotland and made many trips there, including for niece Louise's wedding, when all eight siblings were last together.
Susan and family prospered in Manitoba for 20 years, and owned the Ryall Hotel in Carman, along with fellow Scots Sandy and Bunty Beattie. From 1978 their wandering feet took them to Comox and Victoria , then to the Okanagan. In 1996 they moved back to Winnipeg, and their house was a hub for gatherings of family and friends. Fiona and Mel moved in with Susan in 2015 to facilitate staying in her own home as long as possible.
Susan thrived on social connection and made friends wherever she went; a true social butterfly. She loved the social aspect of her jobs at Sears Ladies' Department and the University of Manitoba Surplus Store, and remained a consummate and unrelenting hostess all her life.
She was a longtime member of The Order of the Eastern Star, auxiliary Ladies' Shriner groups, and in later years square danced with the Whirlaway Westerners and joined Pembina Active Living.
Susan has been cremated, and due to COVID-19, a private Celebration of Life will be held at the family home.
Our family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff and doctors at Victoria General Hospital (4N) and at Tuxedo Villa (Stn 2), for their care and kindness.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, which were important to Susan during Bill's struggle with lung cancer in 2000 and during Susan's own battle with breast cancer in 2004.

  • I KNEW SUSAN AND BILL WHEN THEY LIVED NEXT DOOR TO US ON TULANE BAY WINNIPEG. THEY WERE A LOVELY COUPLE AND WE ENJOYED MANY A GREAT TIME WITH THEM IN OUR BASEMENT PARTIES WITH ALL THE NEIGHBORS AND THEIR FRIENDS. I CAN VIVIDLY RECALL LATE ONE EVENING SOON AFTER THEY HAD MOVED IN, WHEN I WAS AWAKENED BY THE SOUND OF BAGPIPES!!! I THOUGHT I WAS DREAMING BUT SOON DISCOVERED IT WAS COMING FROM THEIR HOME WHERE THERE WAS ALWAYS MUSIC AND LAUGHTER. I ALSO REMEMBER WITH GREAT FONDNESS THEIR LARGE DOG BRUTUS....MY CONDOLENCES TO FIONA AND HER FAMILY. DIANE WALTON, KELOWNA BC - Posted by: DIANE WALTON (NEIGHBOR) on: Aug 15, 2020
