TANIS NORVAL DREHER
1943 – 2020

Tanis, born June 27, 1943, passed away peacefully at Boundary Trails Health Centre Thursday, August 13, 2020 with family by her side.
Tanis was the daughter of Harry and Norval (nee Cope) Dreher and sister to Thomas (Tom) whom have all predeceased her. She leaves to mourn her sister-in-law Marlyn, nieces and their families: Patricia and Dan Yaung along with children, Erin, Ella and Anna of LaSalle, Ontario, Lisa and Kevin Krueger along with children, Lynsay and David Olafson and Brett all of Morden and her nephew Edward (Ted) Dreher of Morden. She also leaves to mourn her three great-great-nieces, Jaycee, Ava and Danika Olafson. These three girls brought special joy to her life with their sweet smiles and energetic yet very different personalities. As well, she leaves some very dear friends.
Tanis was born and raised in Portage la Prairie. She often shared fond memories of growing up in Portage, especially those of her grandfather William (Bill) Cope coming to visit from Saskatchewan. Tanis completed grade school and high school in Portage. After graduating high school, she decided on a career in nursing and enrolled in the RN program at the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated from there in 1964 and started her career at the Portage District General Hospital. After nursing for some years, she decided to continue her education and obtained a Bachelor of Nursing degree and later a Master's Degree in Adult Education. In 1973 she became a nursing instructor at the St. Boniface General Hospital School of Nursing and for many years taught Psychiatric Nursing. She taught up until her retirement in 1998. Tanis lived in Winnipeg until September 2018 when she moved to Homestead South Assisted Living in Morden, Manitoba to be closer to family. She enjoyed her time in Homestead and made some really good friends there. She enjoyed the weekly bridge games and the comradery during meals. Tanis enjoyed cooking and entertaining – she had a vast collection of recipe books and cut out recipes! She enjoyed season tickets to The Pops at the Winnipeg Centennial Concert Hall which she attended for many years with her dear friend, Sally. She was a member of the Soroptimist International of Winnipeg spending many years volunteering with them. One of the big highlights in her life was her trip to China. In her retirement she enjoyed taking courses in Creative Retirement, playing Bridge, nursing reunions and making fancy sandwiches for special occasions with friends. She kept in close contact with some very special friends from her years of nursing, teaching and some travelling.
As per Tanis' wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no funeral service.
If friends so desire, donations may be made in Tanis' memory to Morden Handi-Van or the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

  • Deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Tanis Dreher. I met Tanis several years ago through her volunteer work and knew her to be a thoughtful and caring mentor. Please know that my thoughts are with the Dreher family and her Soroptimist 'sisters' during this sad and difficult time.
