DR. THOMAS KENNETH GOODHAND
BSc, MD, FRCS, FACS
July 14, 1926 - August 17, 2020
He was one of the first licensed pediatric surgeons in Manitoba, and enjoyed a rewarding career of almost 50 years at the Abbott Clinic, working at the Grace, Children's and St. Boniface hospitals.
He was up for any adventure, twice crossing the Atlantic in small aircraft - in his own Cessna 182 with brother-in-law, Dennis Ringstrom, as part of an epic air rally from New York to Paris; and later in his grandson's Cessna 310 to play the Old Course in Scotland.
Fiercely loved and admired by his family - Joyce, Lois (Fred Burch), Margo (Glenn Cheater), Linnea (Dale Beaudry); 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Bill. Tom was predeceased by Loreen, his wife of 64 years; their son, Bruce; granddaughters, Katie and Rachel Burch; brother, Cameron; and parents, Bruce and Ruth Goodhand.
He was born and raised in Dauphin, MB, attending University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba, before graduating as an MD in 1953. He made the best decision of his life in 1951 when he married Loreen, his toughest critic and biggest fan. He practiced as a GP in Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie, before qualifying as a general, and then pediatric surgeon.
When he got his pilot's licence in his 40s, he combined both passions as a "flying doctor" for 18 years, providing weekly surgical consultations in Deloraine, Baldur, Gimli, Gypsumville and Virden. Other jobs included assessing medical claims for the Workers Compensation Board, installing Victoria Lifelines, and driving CancerCare patients.
A graceful and natural athlete, he skied in Yugoslavia, climbed in Chichen Itza, sailed across Lake Winnipeg and skated the Red River trail into his late 80s. But curling (at the Granite) and golf were his favourites. He played both this year, shooting his age in July, shortly after turning 94.
Dad was competitive but fair; fearless, fun-loving and unflappable.
He made friends wherever he went.
Age and ailments were only temporary setbacks. When he lost his pilot's license due to a heart aneurysm, he and a buddy chose to build their own ultralight, flying it out of St. Francis Xavier. When they sold the ultralight, he took up flying drones, one of which is still suspected of assaulting the Xmas decorations at Lion's Place.
His grace, courage and carpe-diem mantra will always be an inspiration.
Seize the day.

Dr. Goodhand was the first doctor I went to at the Abbott Clinic when I was in my late teens and he remained my doctor until he retired. My husband & I enjoyed a number of dinners at Rae & Jerrys with him and his wife and our friends Kris & Arne Pedersen when they visited us from Norway. I believe Arne was a relative of the Goodhands. Sincere condolences to his family. - Posted by: Eileen Warren (Patient) on: Aug 30, 2020

I had the pleasure of working for Dr. Goodhand as an intern at St Boniface Hospital and later as a colleague as a Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon. Tom was a superb surgeon as well as a superb teacher and person. It was a pleasure having known him and benifitted from both his teachings and consultations. My Condolances to the Goodhand family. I must say a word, I remember Tom on the few times I worked at his father's drugstore in Dauphin. Also the way he was as a doctor with me when I went to the clinic. I always felt that I was wasting time talking about our hometown. My sincerest condolences - Posted by: Robert Bull (Patient and from Dauphin ) on: Aug 27, 2020

Tom and Loreen were amazing and wonderful lifelong friends of my parents. My fond memories of his visits to dad in California extended all the way up to just a few years ago when he arrived in his truck with his drone in tow. I miss that generation, they demonstrated the importance of family and friends in all they did. My love and best wishes to the Goodhand family, Darcie Lamond - Posted by: Darcie Lamond (Friend) on: Aug 27, 2020

It is with much sadness that I share my memories of Tom Goodhand. In 1977, I was a junior partner at the Abbott Clinic, having just finished my training in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery in Ottawa. Tom was 17 years my senior, and he was like a big brother to me and a role model. He always wore a smile on his face, cheered me up when I was down. He was well liked and respected in the Clinic and at the Grace Hospital. One bad habit, perhaps the only, he had was he was often late to arrive at the Operating Room and he had to invent some excuses to calm down the dominating Head Nurse, Miss Sparrow, like "I locked myself in the washroom!" He took me home for dinner every now and then. On one occasion, my tooth almost broke because he served a game he shot and there was a piece of shrapnel in it. He also invited me once to be a co-pilot with him. It was an extraordinary experience but I was actually quite scared. I still remember he said jokingly, "Jimmy, don't puke all over my airplane." I did not. Tom, I used to receive X'mas greetings from Loreen. You never wrote. It was as if I have some special sense that I have been asking our former partners about you recently, and I got this sad news from Dr. Ali Pirani. I regret that I have not been in direct contact with you since I returned to Hong Kong in 1982. All the memories I have of you are happy ones. I could go on writing, but I have tears in my eyes now. Tom, how I miss you! I am sure you are smiling in Heaven. My deepest condolence to Tom's family. - Posted by: Dr. James CHIU. (Former partner at the Abbott Clinic.) on: Aug 26, 2020

My condolences to the Goodhand family I have many good memories of spending time at the cottage at Matlock and the wolseley home. I appreciated having him as my doctor for number of years. Though I didn’t know Dr Goodhand well, my father Bill Atkinson did (he also lives in Lions Place). When I would come for dinner on Sundays I enjoyed chatting with him and his two dedicated grandsons. I will miss seeing his cheery face and enjoying his wonderful personality. My sincerest condolences to his family. May I please request an email from one of his grandsons so that I may have the opportunity to speak with one of them. Thank you. - Posted by: Coralie Bornais (Atkinson) (Chatted regularly on Sundays at Lions Place) on: Aug 22, 2020

We are so sad to hear about Tom's passing. He was such a wonderful man! In addition to all of the great memories of the Goodhand-McTavish gatherings of the past, I will never forget what a privilege it was when Tom asked me to go along with him on a trip to Cambridge Bay (Nunavut). It opened my eyes to the stark beauty of Canada's north. To this day, it remains one of the greatest adventures of my life. Much love to all of the Goodhand clan!
