WILLIAM (BILL) FREDERICK BOND
November 1, 1944 – August 8, 2020

After a short illness, this happy gentle giant got the call up to join the hockey team in the sky.
He is survived by his loving wife Susan of 39 years, son Joby and wife Kimberly, three grandchildren, Julia, Ev and Grey in Burlington, Ontario; brother-in-laws, Lou Koldy (Winnipeg), and Hugh Chatfield (Mary) in Ottawa, special niece Louann Heieie (Bill) in Winnipeg, plus many nieces and nephews throughout the country. Bill was predeceased by his mother, father and sister June.
Bill's love of hockey was evident throughout his career. He played junior with the Winnipeg Monarchs and then with the Brandon Wheat Kings. He played 10 years in the IHL mainly in Columbus, Ohio for the Checkers, Seals and Owls. After hockey, he joined Bell Canada as a splicer. He retired early and was lucky to travel with Susan throughout North America, Caribbean and Europe. He was a member of the Millcroft Golf Club where he enjoyed great times and good friends. On return to Winnipeg, he loved his Saturday "safety meetings" with his friends from hockey to share many stories, laughs and fun with the boys. Bill was recently inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame as a member of the champion Flin Flon Warriors. His happy smiling face will be missed by all who knew him.
Cremation has taken place. There will not be a formal service.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to any Minor Hockey Association in Manitoba; or to the Winnipeg Humane Society; or Craig Street Cats in Bill's name would be appreciated.
Many thanks to the great staff at HSC-GD2 for their great care and compassion.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • All I remember about Billy as he was known was playing hockey in -35 degrees outside at the C.U.A.C. in the North End of Winnipeg. He was a great hockey player and a great team mate. I also remember his dad who attended every game to cheer us on and also give us young hockey players guidance. We won a lot of games together and it was sad to hear about his passing. My condolences to his family and to let them know he was a great teammate who gave us all fond memories! - Posted by: Randy Komar (hockey team mate) on: Jan 15, 2021

  • My condolences to the Bond family. Your father was quite an athlete and teammate. I played early playground rec hockey with Bill at Ralph Brown School rink. We both played defense and he was lot better than me. Bill Bond Sr and couple of other fathers in our area formed a soccer league for us kids to play in during the summer months when we were around ages 9-10. There were four evenly matched teams and we played two games a week. When we reached age 14, one team was formed to play against the other teams in the city. This team, Ralph Brown won the city championships for the next four years. We never lost a game in the four years and in the first year, we did not have a goal scored against us. I played defense with Bill. Bill had great foot and could kick the ball over half the field. I have a memory of him rushing past a defender and kicking the ball before it met the ground. The ball flew over three quarters of the field. We both looked at each other surprised at what just happened. Bill was a warm and cheerful person. But you could see his serious competitive spirit when he was playing. I think he got his competitiveness from his father. Although his father had only one arm, he was a very serious soccer coach. He would get on the field to play with us very competitively. Bill was a top defenseman not only in hockey but in soccer. I have a lot of fond memories of us playing together when we were young. Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Colin Dederick (in Bill's younger days, a team mate) on: Aug 29, 2020
