JEAN GREVSTAD

Jean Kathleen Grevstad, 92, formerly of Winnipeg, Manitoba, died August 14, 2020, at Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, BC. She was with her family.
Jean was born September 23, 1927, in Regina, Saskatchewan to Rebecca Clingham and her name at birth was Daphne. She was adopted by Ernest and Elsie Pickens who named her Jean and raised her in a loving home. An only child, Jean grew up on a farm in Pleasantdale, SK. Jean always remembered her horse and her dog. She remained a prairie girl at heart.
Jean attended business college in St. Albert, Saskatchewan and then got a job with the Bank of Montreal in Saskatoon. She married William Harvey Grevstad in 1953. Jean and Bill had two daughters: Deborah and Lisa. They lived a cosmopolitan life in several cities including Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal. Jean continued to work with the Bank of Montreal, eventually becoming the first female bank manager in Western Canada. What a trail blazer!
Jean and Bill were later to divorce after which time Jean formed a loving relationship with Harold (Barry) Knudson. During this period of her life Jean had the opportunity to travel to many places around the world including Europe, California and India. After her retirement from the bank Jean went on to work at Revenue Canada. In her later years Jean became an actively involved member of Augustine United Church.
Jean was a cheerful and contented person. She had a happy childhood but was curious about her birth mother. Finally in her 80s Jean got to meet her sisters and learn the story of her birth mother. In 2016 she moved to Nelson, BC to spend her last years in the company of her daughter's family.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Deborah Ann Lysenko; son-in-law, Mark Groening; stepchildren, Lori, Kim and Glen; grandchildren, Jasmine (and Danaraj), Krishan and Mykyta (and Jackline); great-grandchildren, Shunyata, Uma Jean and Elizabeth Sapphire; her sisters, Sheila, Joan and Rita; and many adoring nieces and nephews. Mrs. Grevstad was preceded in death by her daughter, Lisa Christine Groening.
Cremation has taken place. An interment in the Nelson Memorial Park Cemetery will take place at a later date.
As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made in Jean's name to the Winnipeg Humane Society or St. Augustine United Church.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • To Jean's Family Members Please accept our condolences at this late date. I just heard the sad news today. I live in BC as does my sister Lawna. Our Mom (Lorraine London) was a dear friend of Jean's. They worked together at Revenue Canada, worshipped together at St. Augustine, and often took drives to Selkirk for cinnamon buns or Gimli for fresh pickerel. They spoke every day on the phone while my Mom was still alive. I have kept in touch with Jean since she moved to Nelson. I kept in touch every 6 months or so. I spoke with her in late June. She was a good friend and a wonderful lady, and will be surely missed by all those who knew and loved her. I hope she gets to ride in a convertible in heaven. She mentioned over coffee during one of my visits to Winnipeg she always wanted to. I know she was welcomed "Home" with open arms by those she loved and went before her. • Well I wasn't expecting these tears this morning. I have thought of Jean often, and always fondly, since I last ran into her near her Kenaston residence about 15 years ago. Jean was a positive influence in my life from the ages of 12 to 25; she provided me with some motherly comfort in times of need that I did not get at home. She also gave me my first loan at 22 helping me establish a credit rating. I remember celebrating several Xmas eves at the Knudsons in Waverley Heights and we remained in contact intermittently until the mid 90s. I am thankful she was a part of my life and wish to express my condolences to her family on the loss of a most wonderful human being and force of nature. - Posted by: Gloria Lasko (family friend) on: Sep 04, 2020

  • I had the pleasure of volunteering with Jean at the Nearly New Shop for a few years. She always amazed me with her ability to add the deposit faster in her head than we would do on the computer. - Posted by: Herdith Flaig (Friend) on: Sep 04, 2020
