DONNA MCKENDRICK

Early on Saturday morning, August 29, 2020, Donna Marie McKendrick succumbed to complications due to Kidney disease, which she had been battling for more than a decade.
Donna was predeceased by her mother, Mildred (née McDonald); father, Jim McKendrick; aunt, Jean McKendrick; partner, John Dradrach; and late ex-husband, Roy McLeod.
Donna is survived by her beloved son, Darren McLeod, and younger sister, Coral McKendrick. She also leaves behind good friend, Pat Chevier, whose friendship and frequent visits during Donna's final years were much appreciated. Donna's first foray into employment was as a teacher of grades four to six, in Manigotogan, Manitoba. A teaching job that came complete with roommate, wood stove cooking, and water hauled from the river. After years of being a stay-at-home mother, Donna's first job was with Canada Post and when Darren, then in his teens, went to stay with his father in Edmonton, Alberta, she chose what would be her final career - taxi driver. At the time, she was one of the few women to embrace the profession, particularly as a night-shift driver. She enjoyed driving and continued to do so until the effects of age and arthritis combined to force her retirement.
In keeping with Donna's wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held.
We will miss her, as she takes this, her final trip.
Donna loved animals and cats were a big part of her life. We encourage you to make a donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society in her memory or to the Kidney Foundation, a disease that challenged her in the later years of life.

  • Dear Darren ...please accept Pierre and my condolences. Your mom has been a lifelong friend; we laugh at the fact that I probably would not have graduated from high school if it were not for the fact that your mom would tutor me the night before exams. Truthfully I am forever grateful ..... even in our senior years, she had a knack for explaining things to me that I simply could not comprehend otherwise. She rarely complained about her lot in life and when I questioned her, she would simply say she was being pragmatic. Take care, stay well and a big hug to you for being such a good son. - Posted by: Pat Chevrier (Friend) on: Sep 05, 2020
