Kelly died peacefully at home in Winnipeg at the age of 80, with his wife Dorothy, daughter Tanya, and granddaughter Chelsea, by his side.
He will forever be defined by his love for his family. Kelly's circle of love began with Dorothy, his wife of 52 years; their children, Tanya (Jason), Jeffrey (Melanie), Mika (Erin), and John (Lisa); grandchildren, Chelsea (Jon), Taylor, Hana, Leah, Weston, Kelly, and Harlow; and great-grandchildren, Leia, Jack, and Angela.
He is survived by his sisters, Betty and Floydey; brother James, his in-laws, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Kelly was born in Sturgis, Saskatchewan to Westley Simes and Katherine Gibney. He was the youngest of eight children.
Kelly lived an idyllic childhood filled with adventure and imagination along the Assiniboine River. He loved the outdoors and played baseball in the summer and hockey in the winter. He had a deep passion for golf - especially playing the lefties righties at Crystal Lake.
Beyond his deep love for his entire family, Kelly upheld and enjoyed loyal friendships throughout his life. Kelly worked 40 years for the Toronto Dominion Bank, was a committed Progressive Conservative and a truly loyal Saskatchewan Roughrider fan.
Always a gentleman with good humour and gratitude for his abundant life.
The emptiness left behind by his loss will be indescribable.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jack Rusen, who was Kelly's family physician, and the healthcare workers for their care and compassion, especially Mariane.
Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, a private family service will be held with Monsignor Maurice Comeault officiating. Kelly was always a faithful servant of The Lord.

  • Dear Dorothy, Tanya, Jeff, Mika, John, Chelsea and Taylor, When I think of Kelly or Pop, I remember his mischievous smile and his absolute love for his family. He was a truly kind person and even when the years stretched between our meetings he always remembered me and made me feel a part of the family. I loved times spent at the cabin in my youth and will never forget getting roped into my first and only political convention. I wish him peace and know that the legacy he leaves in his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will live on. May happy memories of good times help ease the void he has left. Love to all!!
