LIESELOTTE (LEE) HANNELORE
Born in Magdeburg, Germany in 1925 to Hedwig and Karl Piper, Lee immigrated to Canada in 1929. She married William (Bill) Smith on June 20, 1952, and celebrated 43 years of marriage before his early death in 1995. She kept a daily journal and was an ardent letter writer to friends and family far and wide, showcasing skills in typing and shorthand developed as a young stenographer at Maple Leaf Construction and Kraft Foods. She loved reading, especially enjoying her daily newspaper, and anyone who knew Lee also knows that she kept all those newspapers too. Also an avid cinephile, she was a virtual encyclopedia of classic movies, able to recite actors' names and filmographies even as her memory faded.
Lee is survived by her son Clayton, daughter Cindy (Craig), grandsons, Scott (Sarry), Colin (Ashley) and Chance (Kiro), as well as three great-grandchildren, Meleah, Julius and Leo. She was predeceased by her husband, parents and sisters, Anneliese and Edith.
Special thanks to the fourth-floor staff of Concordia Place for their excellent care over the past five years, and to Helen, Susan and Ron for their faithful visits (and Tim Horton's!).
In lieu of flowers, online donations can be made in Lee's name to the Winnipeg Public Library and Canadian Film Centre, in honour of Mom's two passions: reading and film.
Cremation has taken place, and a small family service will be held at a later date.
