With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of Jeana Sanger.
Jeana was predeceased by her parents, Herb and Mary Sanger. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Andrew (Krista) and Wayne (Sara), granddaughter Ilaria, former spouse Gwen, sister Peggy, and special friends, Denise, and both Michelle's of the United States.
Jeana was a brilliant Chartered Accountant, beginning her career at a large firm and later achieving great success operating independently.
In her younger years, Jeana was an enthusiastic camper, often making the trek to camp in and around the Banff area. In her later years, she embraced the peace and quiet of nature at her Kenora cottage.
Jeana had a love for theatre, which she shared with her son, Andrew. Jeana was a ticket holder at MTC, where she and Andrew would frequently attend shows together. She also very much enjoyed reading sci-fi books, listening to classical music, and anything chocolate.
Jeana was quite the handy person, teaching her son, Wayne, many things from changing a bike tire to cleaning the roof. Jeana also had a love for fishing which she passed onto Wayne. These loves and lessons will be passed to Jeana's granddaughter, Ilaria, who always had a knack for making her laugh.
Jeana was passionate about transgender rights and advocacy. She knew that it took a great deal of courage to be open and honest about who someone is as a person. She believed that everyone had the right to be happy in themselves, given respect, and feel safe in this world without having to hide themselves from it.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Rainbow Resource Centre in Jeana's name.
A funeral will be held at a later date, when it is safe to do so.
Special thank you to the Winnipeg Police and First Responders for their kindness and compassion.
Please remember to always treat each other with kindness and respect. People are people, and love is love!

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I'm so sorry to learn of Jeana's passing. Jeana was a special and kind human being. She did my taxes for over 20 years (and those of many of my family members) she was always so thorough and I loved our yearly visits at tax season as we laughed about who in my family got their documents to her the latest. It was so wonderful to witness her transition and to celebrate her retirement from accounting. Although I missed our talks I was so happy she was out living her life in alignment with herself. My heartfelt condolences to all her loved ones. - Posted by: Jen Loewen (friendly client) on: Sep 10, 2021

  • Jeana was my student for many years at Prana studio. She was dedicated to the practice and teachings of the ancient science, showing up every week to unroll her mat in ‘Jeana’s spot’, game to try any pose and ask challenging questions. She was also a considerate friend, never forgetting my birthday! I learned much from Jeana through her sharing her life’s journey with me. Those she touched will miss her earthly presence. - Posted by: Brenda Reimer (Yoga teacher ) on: Sep 28, 2020

  • I got connected with Jeana in 2008. I met an acquaintance of her’s while I was attending a writing workshop cruise and she connected us. Jeana and I then connected and have been friends ever since! Although I Only met her once in person, we spoke on the phone every other week for 12 years! She was an amazing, strong, spiritual woman with such grace, integrity and so giving! She loved her family so very much! On my birthday......every year, her card was ALWAYS the first to arrive! I will miss our phone calls, but feel her presence in my life every day! I feel very grateful that she was part of my life! RIP my dear friend, Jeana! I love you! - Posted by: Michelle Alexander (Good friend!) on: Sep 27, 2020

  • Jeana was a staunch supporter of transgender rights. She was my friend but much closer to my writing partner, Mrs. Michelle Alexander RN. When we wrote "The Color of Sunlight," a Lambda-nominated memoir of Mrs. Alexander's experiences with a blind, terminally-ill trans woman, Jeana was an enthusiastic supporter and tirelessly promoted the book in the Winnipeg region. I never met Jeana in person but we corresponded extensively following the publication of "Sunlight." She thoroughly approved of my plans to attend graduate school and I was very proud to be able to send her a copy of my master's degree last year. I feel that, without her influence and wise counsel, I never would have finished such an arduous task. I used to send her copies of my short stories, many of them Science-Fiction, her favorite genre. She would often caution me if she felt that the story was too dark or grim. "Isn't there enough of that already in this world?" she asked. "Perhaps your real task as a writer is to show us a way out of that, a light at the end of a long night of despair." I've never forgotten that bit of advice. I never will. Jeana was a good woman, a kind and beautiful soul with whom I shared much. I was proud to call her "sister." - Posted by: Michelle Rose (Friend) on: Sep 27, 2020

  • Andrew, Wayne, Gwen, Peggy and your families, I am so sorry for your loss. I am also sorry that Covid is preventing us from getting together as a family at this time. - Posted by: Andrea Gladu (Cousin) on: Sep 27, 2020

  • To my cousin. May you finally be at peace. It was a hard journey for you. You are in my thoughts forever.. - Posted by: Ginny Huovinen (Cousin) on: Sep 27, 2020

  • Jeana mentored me in my development as a young Tax professional at Touche Ross & Co. in the late '80s. She understood and taught Tax in practical ways, not just by academic theory. She had unlimited patience. And she gave me a good life lesson which reminds me to stay physically active -- she told me once that when she took a shower, she preferred to have a good reason (eg having just exercised)! Best wishes to her family. Dan Torbiak, FCPA, FCA - Posted by: Dan Torbiak (former colleague) on: Sep 26, 2020
