KIEPER: Verna Eleanor (nee Close) (Evans) Kieper passed away peacefully on August 5, 2020 at her residence Hillcrest Place, Brandon MB. Mom was born December 2, 1922 on the farm at Beaufield, Saskatchewan. She was the fifth child of seven born to Henry and Lena Close. Her surviving sister Eileen Henderson lives in Edmonton. Verna married Bruce Evans in November 1944 and moved to the Silver Creek district to farm. They had two daughters Gail and Joyce. Community involvement was a natural part of family life. Much time was spent at the curling rink, teaching Sunday school and singing in the choir. Family and friends had many meals around moms table and many games of cards. Mom was instrumental in starting the 4H sewing club in the Silverton district. She worked for several years in the Agricultural office in Russell, judging at rallies and organizing 4H youth trips. Upon retirement Mom and Dad moved to a trailer in Silverton, where young and old were welcome. In 1985 mom married Willis Kieper, a long-time family friend. They had always been active in community work and they continued by delivering meals on wheels, working at the Information centre, and were involved in all church activities. In September 2012 they moved to Victoria Landing in Brandon. Even though meals were provided Mom kept snacks and drinks in her room to serve visitors. Mom continued to attend church UCW and WI for several more years. Mom was predeceased by Bruce Evans in 1978, son-in-law Donald Thicket in 2012, Willis Kieper in 2016 and daughter Joyce in August 2020. Mom is fondly remembered by her daughter Gail; son-in-law Tim; Grandchildren Doug Thickett (Daniella), Kim Thickett and family Tyler Jenna and Brianna as well as many nieces, nephews and step-children who have memories they cherish. A public visitation was held on Monday, August 10, 2020 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. from the Braendle-Bruce Funeral Chapel, Russell. A graveside funeral service was held on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. from the Silver Creek Cemetery, Silverton, Manitoba with Rev. David Howell officiating.
