KOWBEL: Julia Kowbel passed away peacefully on Friday, January 16, 2009 at Valleyview Care Centre in Brandon. Julie was born in Brandon on October 24, 1931 and grew up on a farm in Oak Lake and Forrest, Manitoba. Julie attended Glanton School, high school in Forrest and St. Michael’s Academy in Brandon. She received her B.A. from St. Mary’s College, Winnipeg and her B. Ed. from the University of Manitoba. Julie’s first teaching position was in Hilton, Manitoba where she taught Grades 9-11. She moved to British Columbia and taught in William’s Lake and Mission City. Julie had a great interest in the French language and moved to Quebec City where she taught for one year and pursued her interest in art. In 1969, Julie moved to Edmonton where she taught until her retirement. After retiring, she continued her interest in art and drama and was involved with the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace, Plow Shares and performed with the Raging Grannies. She was a member of the UCWLC at Dormition Ukrainian Catholic Church in Edmonton. She was a great cook and we will miss her bread making, home-made chicken noodle soup and tapioca pudding. Julie was predeceased by her father Nicholas in 1975, her mother Anna in 1988 and her brother-in-law Franz Vogrinetz in 2005. She is survived by her siblings Michael, Mary, Cathy, Jean, Danny (Patricia); nieces Nicole (Derrick), Chantelle (Myles), Candace, Rebecca, Melissa, Vanessa; and nephews Christopher, Nathan; great nephews, Nikolaus, Cole, Dawson; great nieces Lily, Elle, Madison, Macy, Rosabella; her dear friends in Edmonton Helen Brunelle, Gail and Louis Spavors, Betty Farrell and Ruthanna. Prayers will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, Brandon. Divine Liturgy will be held at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 927 Assiniboine Avenue, Brandon on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. with Father Michael Tkachuk, as Celebrant and Stella Fedeniuk as Cantor. The family would like to thank Dr. M. M. Egan and 3rd floor and support staff at Valleyview Care Centre for their excellent care and friendship. A special thank you to Father Peter and Mrs. Shirley Brezdan of Edmonton for visiting Julie after move to Brandon.
