DEAN: Marian Margaret Dean (nee Sokolowski). It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Marian Dean on January 19, 2009 at the Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg at the age of 73. Marian is lovingly remembered by her children Donna (DJ) Jackson of Sarnia, Ontario, Rachael (Cam) Ballance of Brandon, Richard (Jackie) Dean of Winnipeg, Robert (Rose) Dean of Cornwall, Ontario, Cesha Wakely of Brandon, sisters Beatrice Batre of Sydney, British Columbia, Anne Onufryl of Sudbury, Ontario, and brothers Walter (Shirley) Sokolowski of Onanole and Charles (Pat) Sokolowski of Brandon. Also left to mourn her passing are 17 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Marian was predeceased by her husband William Dean, daughter Ellen Deschenes, parents Walter and Alexandra Sokolowski, brothers Bernie and John Sokolowski, and sister-in-law Audrey Sokolowski. Marian was born in Brandon, Manitoba on November 2, 1935. She was raised in Brandon along with her 6 brothers and sisters and remained there until she met the love of her life William Dean of Halifax, N.S. They married on May 29, 1954 and after moving to various places throughout Canada, with 6 kids in tow, the family settled in Sudbury, Ontario. After the death of her husband of 22 years, Marian returned home to Brandon to raise her 4 youngest children. She would later return to Ontario for a brief period of time before finally settling in Winnipeg. Marian began working in the Hospitality Industry at the age of 15 and only started to slow down over the past few years due to her failing health. She was a very hard worker and was always there to lend a helping hand. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and spent countless hours making crafts, cooking and baking, and was always up for a game of Bingo. Marian has touched many lives and will be truly missed. The family would like to thank all the Doctors, Nurses and support staff at Victoria General Hospital for the excellent care given to Mom during her stay. Also a big thank you to the Doctors and Nurses at CancerCare Manitoba. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2009 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. A gathering of family and friends will follow in the reception centre. Marians final resting place will be beside her husband at St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Copper Cliff Ontario. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, Room 1160, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3E 0V9. Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 982-7550.
