IRVINE: Dorothy Jean Irvine, late of Westwood Lodge, Rivers, passed away at the Hamiota Hospital on Sunday, January 25, 2009. Dorothy was born at Crandall, Manitoba on July 17, 1908. She received her education in Crandall, and then Normal School in Brandon. Dorothy married William George Irvine at Crandall and they had three girls. The family then moved to Virden, Manitoba during the Second World War, where her son Garry was born. In 1949, they moved to Rivers, Manitoba. Dorothy was a teacher in one-room schools. Because she was a reader from an early age, she assisted in setting up the library in Rivers, Manitoba. Dorothy was a member of the Deborah Rebekah Lodge #9, the WI, Rivers United Church, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #75 Ladies Auxiliary. She loved to read, and do crosswords. Dorothy was a great knitter, crocheter, and baker, especially pies and fruitcake. She recently celebrated her one-hundredth birthday. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband William "Bill"; mother Ethel Bell; sister Phyllis; daughter Phyllis; brother Jim and sister Margaret. She will be lovingly remembered by: her daughter Willa Barkley (Don), children Shelna (Bruce) and Alanna (John); daughter Marilyn Dickson (Maurice), children Michael (Emily), Jeffrey (Bonnie); son, Garry Irvine (Edith), children Yvonne, Cheryl, Belinda, Wanda, Lisa and Gregory. There are eighteen great grandchildren. The Ceremony to Celebrate Dorothy's Life was held at the Rivers United Church on Friday, January 30, 2009. Rev. Glenna Beauchamp officiated. Honorary Urn Bearers were her great grandsons Brendon and Shane Dickson. Urn Bearer was great granddaughter, Shandra Dickson. Interment will take place at a later date.
