HAIG: John (Jack) Andrew Haig passed away peacefully at Dinsdale Personal Care Home on January 31, 2009 at the age of 81. Jack, the third eldest child of Arthur and Irene Haig, was born on the farm at Fishing Lake, Saskatchewan on April 25, 1927. A year later the family moved to Alexander, Manitoba. Jack attended school in Alexander and in the early years of his youth he spent most of his summer holidays at his grandfather Hilt’s farm at Fishing Lake. Later, as a teenager he worked during the summer with the bridge gangs on the railway. Jack was also involved with the Air Cadets. On completion of his education in Alexander, Jack attended the Success Business College in Winnipeg. In 1947 Jack started to work for the Provincial Government with the Good Roads Department as a member of the survey crew. He remained there until 1952 when he applied for a position as a civilian driver with the Department of National Defense at Camp Shilo and drove for the Royal Canadian School of Artillery Mechanical Transport for six years. In 1958 he went to work for Roseman’s Furniture Store in Brandon. In 1968, he returned to work with the Good Roads Department, where he remained until his retirement in 1990. Jack enjoyed fishing and duck hunting. He was a Scout Leader in Alexander. Jack was always fascinated by airplanes and enjoyed building and flying radio controlled model planes. In later years Jack enjoyed reading, watching movies and visiting with friends and family. Jack was predeceased by his parents and three sisters, Catherine (Beth), Margaret (Dot), Kennethe (Alice). Jack will be sadly missed by his brothers-in-law William (Rocky) Lunan of Victoria, BC; Neil Holmes of Casa Grande, Arizona; nephew Terry (Brenda) Lunan, nieces Darlene (John) Van Mulligen, Wendy (Vince) Barcellona, nephew Bill (Rose) Badham, as well as many other nephews and nieces and great-nephews and nieces. As per Jack’s wishes there will be no funeral service at this time. A graveside memorial will be held at a later date. Brockie Donovan Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family would like to thank Dr. Maier and the staff of Dinsdale Personal Care Home for their kind and compassionate care while Jack was a resident. Donations in memory of Jack, may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Westman Region, B-727-10th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 4G7.
