GIBBONS: Brenda Verna Gibbons passed away on Friday, February 6, 2009 at 11:10 a.m. after losing her battle with cancer. Brenda was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, on January 18, 1955, moving to Douglas, Manitoba, with her family at a very young age. She had been visually impaired all her life. Brenda attended school for the blind in Brantford, Ontario, until grade nine. She then attended Elton Collegiate for the rest of her high school days. Brenda graduated from Brandon University with a Bachelor of Education degree in 1982. She married Walter Gibbons in 1985. Mrs. Gibbons made her home in Brandon, Manitoba, for the rest of her life. Brenda played the harp and piano for enjoyment. She was also an avid wine maker as well as a great cook, and she was a very good listener to other peoples problems. She had a solid, joyful spirit and a strong faith in God exhibiting much compassion and kindness. Mrs. Gibbons is predeceased by her father, Alex Malenko. She is survived by her brother Wayne Malenko, her mother Verna Malenko, her husband Walter Gibbons, stepson Daniel, his wife Emily and their daughter Elizabeth Drena Lane Gibbons, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Harvey Hurren officiating. Interment followed at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were Wayne Larsen, Stewart Hayter, Daniel Gibbons, Cecil Bayliss, Lloyd Safruik and George Carmichael. Donations in memory of Brenda may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, "Cancer Services," 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 2B3.
