FALLOON: Betty Falloon formerly of Foxwarren and recently of Sunnyside Manor in Birtle passed away peacefully on Feb. 11, 2009 at the age of 97. Betty was born on November 24, 1911, the eldest child of Frank and Lucy Gardham of Arrow River, Manitoba. One of her earliest memories is of a trip she took with her mother and sister Enid back to England at the age of two. After schooling Betty came to work in Foxwarren district where she met and later married Doug Falloon. They held their 50th Wedding Anniversary on December 21, 1986. In 1944 they purchased the farm at 35-17-28 in the R.M. of Ellice and lived there until they retired to Foxwarren in 1976. Betty and Doug were well-known sports fans and faithfully followed the local teams for many years. Visitors to Sunnyside would often remark that Betty would have the Oilers on TV, the Wheat Kings on the radio, and be phoning the Foxwarren Rink to see how the Falcons game was going. Baseball was another favorite as a spectator and curling was her favorite as a participant. She curled in the Provincial Golden Gals playoffs in 1989. As well as the Ladies Curling Club, Betty was a long-time member and treasurer of the Foxwarren Women’s Institute. She and Doug were both involved in the formation of the Foxwarren Leisure Centre and Betty spent many enjoyable hours taking part in the activities there. In 2003 Betty received a Volunteer Award for her years of service to both the Recreation Centre and the Leisure Centre. Betty was devoted to her family, the farm, and the community. She truly mourned the passing of the elevators, the school, the curling rink, the stores, and more recently the United Church which make up such a large part of life in a farming community. Betty was predeceased by her husband Doug in 1987, infant son Larry in 1937, daughter Shirley Beaton in 1988, parents Frank and Lucy, sisters Enid Orr and Ethel Johnson, and brother George Gardham, in-laws Con Orr, Doug Johnston, Georgina Gardham, Lois Falloon, and Lillian Falloon. Betty is survived by two sons at Foxwarren, Don (Dianne) Falloon, Ron (Diane) Falloon, and one daughter Janet (Dave) Gervin of Goodlands; son-in-law Drillon Beaton of Elphinstone ; seven grandchildren, Bill (Kelly), Neil (Cindy), Lori (Heath), Jill, Pat (Kristen), Gary, and Sam (Stacey) ; eight great-grandchildren, Kevin (Kayla), and Derek; Jack, Mary and Grant; Elizabeth and William; and Camryn. Also surviving are: her brother Harry Gardham (Thelma) of Miniota, in-laws Lillian Gardham of Hamiota, Maurice Falloon of Foxwarren, and Beryl (Ken) Fallis of Winnipeg. The funeral service was held Tuesday, February 17, 2009 from Foxwarren Community Chapel with Rev. Dwight Rutherford officiating. Interment followed at the Zion Cemetery, which Betty had been instrumental in maintaining for many many years. A lunch and time of fellowship were then held in the Foxwarren Leisure Centre. Pallbearers were grandchildren Bill, Neil, Lori, Jill, Pat, Gary, and Sam and great-grandson Kevin. All those in attendance were considered honorary pallbearers. Braendle-Bruce Funeral Service was in care of the arrangements. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, the Foxwarren District Recreation Centre or the Foxwarren Leisure Centre.A well-lived life is like a song,A melody that remains and always in love’s memoryRepeats the sweet refrain…A well-lived life is remembered,Like a beautiful legacythat echoes softly in many heartsThrough all eternity.
