COOK: Freda Glenda Cook of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, passed away peacefully at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon on Monday, March 16, 2009 at the age of 74 years. Freda was born to Isabel Paul and Archie Essie on December 19, 1934. She was born and raised in Sioux Valley along with her brothers and sisters. Freda is survived by her sister Victoria and brother Karl. She was predeceased by her beloved brothers and sisters, Herman, Jerome, Cecilia and Mary (Flossie). While working at a diner, she met her husband, David Cook, who has predeceased her. Freda had 11 beautiful children she was predeceased by her son Kenny, and is survived by Melvin, Edith (Ken), Dave, Jim (Remona), Linda, Lorrie (Donald), Debbie, Thomas (Kitty), Anthony (Kristen), Stephanie (Dean). Stephanie was raised by her grandmother Freda since she was a baby. Freda took her as one of her own. Freda was a very kind, caring woman who lived by the traditional ways, while residing in Oak Lake and Brandon for a while, she eventually moved to her home in Sioux Valley. She enjoyed getting together with some of the ladies from Sioux Valley to play Keno and an occasional game of Bingo. She also liked beading, watching movies and feeding the birds that visited her deck. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and going to pow-wows to watch her boys dance. She enjoyed attending traditional sundances, sweats and ceremonies. We have shared many good times with our sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will forever be remembered and loved by the many people whose hearts she has touched. Big thanks to Eugene Ross and Rose Essie you have been a big help thank you for your love and support, the family appreciates you both. Thanks to Rachelle Wilk and the nurses on A-3 at the Assiniboine Centre and the Dakota Oyate Lodge. Traditional services and funeral to follow at the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation Band Hall on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415-1st Street, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 2W8 or to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
