KIRKBY: Ferne Elma of Brandon, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre, on Saturday, May 2, 2009. Ferne was born in Russell, Manitoba on February 16, 1928 the eldest of nine children born to Mel and Eva McLaughlin: Earl, Marlin, Eunice, Margaret, Bernice, Vivian, Debbie, and Bruce. Ferne grew up on the family farm in the Clear Lake area. She attended Crawford Park School and Russell High School and during those years was a Manitoba High School Curling Champion. She worked as a storekeeper and following her marriage was a wife, mother and grandmother. Ferne loved to travel and spend time gardening as well as baking and cooking. She enjoyed a good laugh and was comical! Ferne will be lovingly remembered by her children: Bruce Kirkby, Maxine (Garry) Meadows, Donald Kirkby, all of British Columbia and Kenneth Kirkby of Brandon. Grandchildren: Marcie (Mike) and their children Natalie, twins Olivia and Faith, all of British Columbia; Angela (Mark) and their children Gavin Charles and Sarah Nicole, all of Calgary and Ryan of Brandon. She is also survived by her siblings: Eunice (Harold), Peggy (Vincient), Vivian (Harvey), Debbie (Mervin), Bernice and Bruce. Ferne was predeceased by; her parents, Eva and Mel, her husband Harold as well as her brothers Earl and Marlin of Clear Lake, Manitoba. A private family graveside was held at the Brandon Cemetery on Thursday, May 14, 2009 with Rev. Harvey Hurren officiating. Urn Bearer was son, Kenneth. Donations in memory of Ferne may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 9Z9. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com.
