DEKKER: The death of Albert Dekker occurred June 2, 2009 at Brandon Regional Health Centre. Albert was born October 15, 1945 at Zweeloo, Netherlands and immigrated to Canada with his family in April 1951 at the age of five. His first year in Canada was spent in Oberon, Manitoba and then the family moved to Brandon when Albert was six years old. He attended school in his early years at Central School and then moved on to Brandon Collegiate Institute. Albert was stricken by an accident in 1964 that left him a paraplegic but he continued to have a vibrant life. He continued his education with bookkeeping at Manitoba Vocational School (ACC) and was later employed by Old Dutch Foods for many years. He was actively involved in wheelchair sportthrough the Canadian Paraplegic Association in the 1960's and 1970's winning a silver medal in table tennis. In his later years he enjoyed summer at the cabin in Minnedosa and spent many hours playing crib and having coffee at the Legions in Brandon and Minnedosa. Winter coffee breaks involved the Mall. Albert is survived by parents: Jan and Grietina. He is survived by two brothers: Tim, wife Susan and their family; Brooke (Todd) and their son Kaleb; Boyd, Kelsey and Kristin; Ed (Leanne), Ed's son Barry, Leanne's son Jordan. Albert also leaves a special friend Anne Delgaty of Minnedosa. A private graveside ceremony was held at Brandon Cemetery on June 8, 2009. Donations in Albert's memory may be made to the Canadian Paraplegic Association or the Canadian Cancer Society.
