HARKNESS: Ernest Alexander Harkness, October 8, 1920 - July 1, 2009. Ernie passed away quietly with his family at his side in Victoria General Hospital. Born in Souris, he had four brothers and two sisters. He was predeceased in 1997 by his wife of 52 years, Doris, and his second wife, Dorothy in 2002. Also predeceased by son Rodney who died at birth in 1949. He served in WWII with the Winnipeg Rifles and was wounded in 1944 at Caen, France. Ernie worked for the Post Office in Brandon and Neepawa before retiring in 1979 with 32 years service. After his retirement Doris and Ernie enjoyed bus trips - travel to the U.S. and Hawaii. They loved their cabin at Clear Lake and the friends and good times they had there. They spent several winters in Victoria before making the permanent move there in 1990. In 2003 he moved to High Gate Lodge. He made many friends and enjoyed his last years there. He was a great father, grandfather and great grandfather. Ernie will be sadly missed by his children: Terry and Muriel Harkness, Calgary, Jan Harkness, Brandon, Pat and Bob Lavoie, Courtenay, B.C. and Antia and Rick Fraser, Ladysmith, B.C. and eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He also leaves his brother Lorne Harkness (Shirley) Alexander and sisters Alice Melbourne, Morden and sisters-in-law Thelma Harkness, Souris and Marion Marshall, Port Moody, B.C. In years gone by he curled and bowled and coached Little League. He was an active member of the Army Navy and Legion. He was a devoted follower of the Blue Jays. He will be remembered for his warm sense of humor. He was a good and honest man. Since moving to Victoria he has been in a weekly coffee group with friends from the prairies. A Memorial will be held at High Gate Lodge, July 17, 2009. Interment will be in Brandon later.
