COOK: Lorne Holmes Cook. It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Lorne H. Cook on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at Delta British Columbia Hospital, with his family by his side. Beloved husband of Desley, loving father of Lloyd (Ivy), Emma Tucek (Mark), Stephen (Pamela); predeceased by sons Mark, Grant and Brent. Loving grandfather of Crystal, Elise, Jenicca, Celia, Sarah, Stephen, Nathan, Casey, Joey and Nathan. Brother of Jack and Alex (Hazel) Cook. Lorne was born in Virden, Manitoba in 1927. Lorne loved sports, and he was an excellent athlete. Baseball was his favorite sport, and he excelled on the pitching mound. It was the post war late 1940’s, and every Manitoba community and town had a senior baseball team and manager Cliff Cory’s Virden team was considered one of the best. There were a multitude of baseball tournaments and a youthful Lorne Cook came out of the Virden Collegiate to help pitch Virden to many a senior tournament championship. He was on the mound when Virden played the Brandon Greys to officially open the Kinsmen Memorial Stadium in Brandon in 1947. He also played with the North Battleford Beavers of the strong Northern Saskatchewan League. He was certainly a professional baseball prospect! However, Lorne decided to go to University instead, in Brandon, where he received his degree in Geology and played hockey for the Brandon College Caps. The years that followed included his marriage to Desley, their raising of a family, and a busy life in his chosen profession. He became a top Geophysicist in his field which led to living in Canada, Australia and Indonesia. Lorne provided his family with many great adventures over a wonderful lifetime. His retirement years included visits back to the “old home town (Virden)”, church work, curling, skiing and speed skating. A celebration of Lorne’s life was held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Richmond, British Columbia on Thursday, June 18, 2009. Interment followed at Boundary Bay Cemetery in Tsawwassen, British Columbia. Donations to the Delta Hospital Foundation, 5800 Mountain View Boulevard, Delta, British Columbia, V4K 3V6 are appreciated.
