HALLIDAY: June 23, 1918 – October 25, 2009. Jean Elizabeth Halliday (Shaw) passed away peacefully at the Valleyview Care Centre, October 25, 2009 at the age of 91. Following an early career at McKenzie Seeds and Eaton’s, Jean married John Halliday on May 31, 1948 and had three children. She supported many boarders and foster children over the years until her health started to deteriorate. Her hobbies included scrapbooking, photography, crocheting, plants and blue jay birds. Jean was very active in Knox United Church activities with leadership roles in Explorers, CGIT, and UCW. Through church-related outreach programs, she became a vocal advocate and long-time supporter of the Brandon Indian Friendship Centre. She was one of the founding members of the first Brandon Friendship Centre as recorded in the “Three Mere Housewives” article in the Journal of the Manitoba Historical Society, Oct/07. Predeceased by her husband, John, son Doug, sisters Olive and Florence, mother Anna Shaw (Connon), father Edward Shaw, brother Raymond, and niece Lynda Gregory. She is survived by daughter Lianne (Eldon), son Bruce (Neelie), foster daughter Ida (Emerson), daughter- in-law Joanne (Ben), sister Verna Nelson, brother- in-law Henry (Mary) Hlady. Grandchildren Terry (Grace), Joy (Ernie), Adam, Tim, Karla (Phill), Melissa (Brian), Lara (Ryan), Ira, Andrea (Scott) and Mark and great grandchildren, Aidan, Luca, Emma and Jonathan along with several nieces and nephews. Following a private interment, a Celebration of Jean’s life will be on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, Brandon. Rev. David Cathcart of Knox United Church will officiate. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, Unit #1, 613-10th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 4G6 or to the Arthritis Society of Manitoba, 105-386 Broadway, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 3R6.
