June CARTER-SQUIRE

CARTER-SQUIRE: June (Cooke) Carter-Squire passed away peacefully at the Assiniboine Health Centre on Friday, October 23, 2009. She was born at Bannerman, Manitoba in her grandmothers' hotel, on June 8, 1920. Growing up during the depression, she learned many useful skills like cooking, cleaning, canning that she could put to good use the rest of her life. After her mother Vera and stepfather Oscar moved to Wakapaw, Manitoba, she attended Henderson School until she had to leave to help support the family. On the farm she had many pets, cows, pigs, but her favourites were always the dogs. June loved music and dancing. She learned these from her mother, who played piano for dances and concerts all over southern Manitoba. It was at one of these functions that she met Jack Carter-Squire. He would sing and her mother would play. These were the good times that they enjoyed for the rest of their lives. Soon they were married and the family began. After the war, they bought a farm just north of Killarney, Manitoba where they stayed until moving to Brandon in 1955. They struggled for many years, but there was always food, clothes and shelter. She always enjoyed parties and good times with family and friends. Her husband, Jack, passed away in 1999 after 58 years of marriage. She continued to do the things she enjoyed most, cards, crocheting and family. June moved to Hobbs Manor in 1996 on probably the coldest day of that year. Her pleasant personality soon made her many new friends. It was her home and she involved herself in as many aspects of the happenings at Hobbs as she was able. In the last few years, June managed to do many things that she'd never had a chance to do previously. She rode a Ferris wheel, drove a go-cart, Calgary Stampeded and tossed cow chips, and took a holiday in Mexico. June's family gave her the most joy. She clipped every article from the paper, and went to every play or concert they were in if she was able. She leaves to morn her eldest son's widow Mona, daughter Judy, sons Joe (Helene), Rick (Terry), Barry (Alison), daughter Cindy (Robert), grandchildren John (Kim), Dan, Jeff, Lee, Michael, Darrell, Ryan, Alex, Aaron, Sydney, and many great-grandchildren. The Ceremony to Celebrate June's Life was held at Memories Chapel on Monday, November 2, 2009. Rev. Joy Ruddock officiated. Interment followed in the Brandon Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff of the 3rd Floor Assiniboine Centre and Dr.Fourie for the great and gentle care they gave to June. Also, an enormous thank you to Rev.
