MELNYK: Alice (nee Fowell). On Sunday, December 20, 2009, after a valiant battle for life, Alice Melnyk slipped away peacefully with family by her side. Alice was born on October 11, 1927 at Carroll, Manitoba and spent her childhood on the family farm with her parents and six brothers and sisters. At a young age she moved to Brandon and met her husband of 61 years, TimMelnyk. Together they built Tim's Transfer Ltd. working side by side for 48years until retirement in 1994. Alice was always very involved in her parish life as well, serving with the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League, singing in the church choir, and being involved in the Ukrainian Pavilion. Alice found great pleasure in spending time at the family cabin in Sandy Lake for 51 years enjoying the company of family and friends. She leaves behind to mourn her loss husband Tim, two daughters Terri (Ken) Turner and Lori (Randy Dutchyshen) Melnyk. Four grandchildren: Carla (Steve Merko), Julie and Kent Turner and Jordan Melnyk. She is also survived by sisters: Amy Rollins, Elna Smith, May (Tony) Culbertson-Vaz; brother: Ernie (Therese) Fowell; sisters-in-law: Marg Fowell, Daisy Deneka and Vicki Popescul as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. A very special thank you to Dr. De Wet and all of the staff on the palliative ward of the Assiniboine Centre for the phenomenal care, support and attention given to Alice and her family at her time of greatest need. With loving hands and loving hearts you all helped ease the pain. Alice will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her as the best wife, mom, grandma, sister, aunt, cousin and friend anyone could ever ask for. She was always so full of life and a constant source of love and laughter in all the lives she touched. Prayers were said at Memories Chapel, on Sunday, December 27, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 927 Assiniboine Avenue on Monday, December 28, 2009 (today) at 10:00 a.m. Celebrant will be Fr. Michael Tkachuk. Cantor will be Stella Fedeniuk. Interment will follow in the Brandon Cemetery. Donations may be made in memory of Alice to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation Western Manitoba Cancer Center Project or the Brandon Regional Health Centre Palliative Care Unit, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 2B3.Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com.
