ATKINSON: It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ruth Edna Atkinson (nee Ramsden) on December 18th, 2009 in her 88th year. Ruth was born in Brandon on June 18th, 1921 and lived her whole life here. She graduated high school from Brandon Collegiate Institute and went on to obtain her college degree here at Brandon College, now called Brandon University, in 1942. Upon graduating, she went to work for Met Life and also worked for AC Clark Insurance. Ruth returned to college and obtained her Bachelor of Pedagogy and taught Grade 4 at David Livingstone School for a year. She found out that she didn't like teaching so she went to work for the City of Brandon Engineering Department as a secretary. She enjoyed working for the City and worked well into her 70s - many friends were made during these years. Some of Ruth's fondest memories were from the summers she spent in Nova Scotia as a teenager with her sister Doreen, cousins, and her parents, Bert and Christina. She made many lifelong friends in Nova Scotia and made numerous visits back there to see them. Ruth liked to travel and saw Canada from coast to coast and on many occasions, went to the USA to vacation. One thing many people did not know is that Ruth loved to take photographs - mostly scenery and animals. She loved all animals, especially her cats! Ruth is survived by her only child Jim Atkinson (Marlene), brother-in-law, Ray Key, sister-in-law, Vera Majcher, nephew Bill Key (Anita), niece Carolyn Judd (Chris), niece Bev Majcher, and nephew Dan Majcher (Janet). There are numerous other relatives but the above were the closest to Ruth. Ruth was predeceased by her parents, Herbert and Christina Ramsden, her sister, Doreen Key, her husband, Louis Allan (Bud) Atkinson and her good friend, Bill Lysack. A time of visitation will take place Wednesday, December 30, 2009 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Memories Chapel, 330 - 18th Street North. A celebration of Ruth's life will be held on December 31st, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Memories Chapel. Rev. Laird Russell-Yearwood will officiate. Interment will follow in Brandon Cemetery. Because of Ruth's love of animals, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, you make a donation to Funds for Furry Friends - donations can be left at Pet Valu - Better Pet Nutrition in the Corral Centre. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
