KRAHN: John. It is with great sadness our family announces the passing of a very dear husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather on December 15, 2009 in his 84th year. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Helen of 61 years, son Larry, daughters Marlene (Bill), Carol (Hans) and grandchildren Tanya, Tara (Cory) and Tessa and great grandchildren Paige and Brynn. John is also survived by his sister Helen (Tony), brother George (Anne) and brother Henry (Ann) and many nephews and nieces, as well as Helen's family and dear friends. John was predeceased by his parents John and Anna and his sister Anne. John was born February 8, 1925 in Georgstal, Russia. He came to Canada on October 26, 1926 with his parents and a month-old brother. The family settled in Rivers, Manitoba. John grew up in a family of four siblings. He was baptized on his faith as a young man. John married Helen Kroeger in 1948 and they lived on a farm near Rivers and later in the town of Rivers. They were blessed with three children, a son and two daughters. In 1959 the family moved to Brandon. In addition to raising a family of three children and holding down a full-time job, John decided to attend Brandon University and received his B.A. and B.Ed Degrees. In 1966 he began teaching at Assiniboine Community College in the Business Administration Department and later became Assistant Director of the College until his retirement in 1990. John was a member of the Kiwanis Club for many years and enjoyed the friendships and the services they provided for the community. John was an avid sportsman, loved softball, and was a pitcher for the Rivers Rockets team for several years. He also loved golf, was a member of Glen Lea and Deer Ridge golf courses, and spent many winters down south with his wife golfing and enjoying the warm weather. John and Helen became members of the First Baptist Church and they enjoyed the fellowship of many Christian friends there. John held several positions in the church such as Treasurer, Church Moderator and Chairman of the Stewardship and Property Commission. Over the last few months of his life, John was especially thankful to God who gave him strength and comfort during his illness. The funeral service was held at First Baptist Church on Saturday, December 19, 2009. Reverend Randy Stanton and Reverend Orton Anderson officiated. Honorary Pallbearers were Charles Brawn and Lloyd Brown. Pallbearers were Rudy Krahn, Ted Krahn, Neil Thomson, Vern Klassen, Tom Krahn and Bill Kroeger. Interment took place in the Rivers Mennonite Cemetery.
