COWAN: Mary Christina Cowan of Brandon passed away January 15, 2010 at her residence at Fairview Home at the age of 100. Mary was born October 1, 1909 in Jamestown, North Dakota to William and Hannah Mawhinney. As an infant she moved with her family to the Shaw District of the Swan River Valley. She grew up there and attended Shaw School. In 1928 she married William (Bill) Cowan and they resided in the Kenville area until 1932 when they moved to Gilbert Plains. Their son Donald was born in Swan River in 1930. After a move to Carman, where Marlene was born in 1942, they lived briefly in Glenboro and finally moved to Alexander in 1945 where they remained until Bill retired from Manitoba Pool Elevators in 1968 and they moved to Brandon. During her years in Alexander Mary belonged to the UCW, IODE, Curling and Community Clubs. She still enjoyed curling after moving to Brandon and continued curling there for several years. Bill and Mary enjoyed playing bridge and travelling to various places, including several winters inArizona, trips to Eastern Canada, Florida, Texas, California and Hawaii. Mary also enjoyed their summer fishing trips to Cranberry Portage where son Don lived. Mary is survived by daughter, Marlene Campbell and Marlene's family Brent (Gail), Gregory, Darren (Jody); Don's family, Dale (Tina) Cowan, Barry Cowan and Donna-Rae (John) Bargen; great grandchildren Caitlin, Jessica, Curtis and Kendal Campbell, Lisa (Stefan) Nickerson, Devin, Jessica and Josh Burdett. Also surviving is a sister-in-law Grace Scott of Chilliwack. Mary was predeceased by her parents, William and Hannah, husband Bill, son Donald, son-in-law Cordell Campbell, sisters and brothers-in-law, Olga (Russell) Eagle, Stella (Arthur) Vopni, Frances (Walter) Coulthart, Margaret (Bruce) McCullough, brothers and sisters-in-law Jack (Olive) Cowan, Fred (Ruth, Ethel) Cowan, Mary (Oscar) Benson, Lill (George) McCullough, Myrtle (Frank) Fanning, Tom Scott, father and mother-in-law, Robert and Isabella Cowan. The Ceremony to Celebrate Mary's life was held on Friday, January 22, 2010 at Memories Chapel with Rev. Wayne Sanderson officiating. Interment was in Alexander Cemetery. Active Pallbearers were Dale Cowan, Brent Campbell, Darren Campbell, Caitlin Campbell, Lisa Nickerson and John Bargen. Eulogist was Gail Campbell and Caitlin Campbell co-ordinated the video tribute.
