McNISH: On Saturday May 15, 2010 at the Glenboro Health Centre, Ethel Merrall McNish passed away peacefully with her family by her side, at the age of 96 years. She was born on the 21st of June 1913 at Hamiota, Manitoba, and grew up on a farm near Ituna Saskatchewan She attended school in Parkerview Sask. until she moved to Brandon to take her Psych nursing at the Brandon Mental Health Centre where she graduated. Ethel was employed with Brandon Mental Health Centre until she married Telfer McNish and moved to Nesbitt to farm and raise a family of four boys, Gary, Brian, Barry & David. Ethel was involved with the Ladies U.C.W. and United Church in Nesbitt and taught Sunday School for many years. She loved to cook for her family & friends, and would always have tea & lunch for anyone who happened to stop in at any time, day or night. During harvest, there was always lunch for the boys, no matter what time they came in from the field, whether it was 11:00pm or 4:00am in the morning. Her greatest enjoyment was her children, grandchildren & great grandchildren. She had a quick wit that could send you into laughter. Her love for animals began as a young child with her foxes & horses. She was very supportive of her boys which included attending many of their ball games, her pride extended to the whole team. Ethel and Telfer spent many winters in Mission Texas where they met and made many friends. Many a night was spent playing Canasta & Dominos. Their summers were spent at Killarney Lake entertaining friends and family. They moved to Brandon in the mid eighties and Ethel remained there until her move to the Wawanesa Personal Care Home. The personal care home was very much her home, many of the staff were friends of the family growing up, so it made her stay there quite enjoyable. Ethel is survived by her sons Gary (Marilyn) of Manitowogan, Manitoba, and their children Jan (Tracey) Kaleigh and Madoc, Ryan (Janelle) Kindra; Brian (Barb) of Nesbitt and their children Bryson, Alisa, Jaycee, Brett, Robyn and families; Barry (Gail) of Nesbitt and their children Tammy (Darren) Kaden and Riley, Dana (Kenzie) Payton and Grady; David (Juanita) of Wawanesa and their children Stacey (Tom) Shaelynn, and Chad, as well as brother-in-law Marshall Harding and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Telfer, parents Herbert and Emily Lunn, brother Jack Lunn, brother-in-law Donald (Midge) McNish and by sisters-in-law Margaret (Wilf) Wakefield and Lila Harding. A Celebration of Ethels life will be held on Friday May 21, 2010 at 2:00 pm in the Wawanesa United Church with Rev. Carolyn Rushton and Shirley McBurney officiating. Interment will follow in the Minnewawa Cemetery. Following the interment, a reception will be held in the Nesbitt Community Hall.
