HULBERT: Sylvia Alwyn Our beloved sister and aunt, Sylvia Alwyn Hulbert, of Brandon, Manitoba, Manitoba died peacefully on April 26, 2010 at the age of 70 years. Sylvia was born on the family farm at Bethany, Manitoba, on December 17, 1939, the eldest daughter of George Bertram Hulbert and Adéle Amy Kathleen (Morgan). She attended schools in Bethany and Minnedosa, as well as United College in Winnipeg. She was then hired at CFB Shilo for a period of thirty years where she worked in the Engineers’ Department and later as the Base Commander’s Secretary. Sylvia had contracted Polio during the 1952 epidemic at the age of 13 years and spent much time in hospitals in Winnipeg and Toronto and also at rehab in Saskatoon where she stayed with her grandparents, John and Laura Morgan. Despite these challenges, as an adult she traveled extensively to various parts of Canada and the USA, including Expo 67 in Montreal with her cousin, Alva Cline, to the Maritimes, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, and a six-week holiday in 1976 with her eldest niece, Wendy, to Austria, Denmark, England, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland and Wales, visiting many English relatives and many churches and castles, and other areas of interest including “The Changing of the Guard” at Buckingham Palace in London. Sylvia was predeceased by her parents, Bert and Adéle Hulbert, and by her brother, Harold Hulbert. Sylvia leaves to mourn her sister, Valerie (Lionel) Glaser of Brandon, Manitoba; her nieces, Wendy Martin (Elizabeth and David), of Brandon, Manitoba; Elaine (Tony) Gonzales (Jessica, Alex and Morgan) of Kelowna, B.C.; Angela (Dwain) Deal (Jeffrey, Andrew, Colette, Rebecca, Megan and Paul) of Sundre Alberta; Alison Howard of Olds, Alberta; Lisa Hulbert of Brandon, Manitoba; nephew, Kevin Hulbert of Toronto, Ontario; her sister-in-law, Karen Hulbert of Brandon, Manitoba and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends across Canada, the USA and in England. A celebration of Sylvia’s life was held in St. Matthew’s Cathedral, Brandon, Manitoba, with Dean Robin Walker and Bishop Jim Njegovan officiating, with music by Dr. Arthur Bower at the organ, and a large choir, with many friends from St. Matthew’s, and from Sylvia’s Shilo days, as well as from Minnedosa and Bethany, Manitoba, her Uncle Ed Morgan and cousin Pam Buzash of Regina, Saskatchewan, her aunt and Godmother, Winifred Kreager of Selkirk, Manitoba, cousins Lois Graham and Tom Douglas from Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba, and cousins, David and Linda Morgan of Regina, Saskatchewan in attendance, along with her immediate family members. Interment followed in the family plot at Minnedosa, Manitoba. Sylvia was a wonderful sister and aunt and will be deeply missed and forever fondly remembered in our hearts.
