SCOTT: Brian Grant Parker Scott. June 3, 1937 – July 9, 2010. It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of Brian Scott. He is survived by his cherished wife of 53 years, Marilyn and five children – Catherine (Brian), Brian Craig (Debbie), Colleen (Murray), Kelly (Stephen), and Robert (Mary). He was also “Opi” to fourteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Brian was born in Victoria and, after a brief career in the Yarrows Shipyard, joined the Edmonton Police Service in 1961. In his 28-year career in Edmonton, he demonstrated consummate professional skills: rising to Detective Criminal Investigation (1970), Detective Homicide and Robbery (1975); Staff-Sergeant Patrol Division (1979); Staff-Sergeant Criminal Investigation (1981); Staff- Sergeant Tactical Unit (1983); and Inspector Major Crimes (1984). In January 1989, he became Chief of Police in Brandon, Manitoba. By the time that he retired in September 1995, Brian had transformed what is now known as the Brandon Police Service into a modern and effective force; the tangible expression of this transformation came with international accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, the only law enforcement accreditation programme in the world. Among his many professional accomplishments was service on the Board of Directors, Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (1991-1995), Chairman (1989-1992) and Vice- Chairman (1992-1995) of the Manitoba Criminal Intelligence Service, and Chairman of the Prairie Regional Chiefs of Police Association (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the North West Territories) (1990-1991). When he retired, Brian and Marilyn moved back to Vancouver Island and, at the village of Youbou, built their dream home. He spent his time with his growing family – travelling to them or having them come to Youbou. With his dog “Lee” at his side, his hobbies included carpentry, landscaping and gardening. But his first devotion was always to his family. In lieu of flowers, and because of Brian’s great love for animals, the family asks that a donation in Brian’s name be made to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals.
