MURRAY: Georgena Margaret, age 91. Georgie passed away July 30, 2010 at the Souris Personal Care Home. Georgie was born December 11, 1918 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to James and Georgena (Slater) Dickson. Georgie’s mother passed away a few days later. She was raised by her father and grandmother, Agnes Dickson. While working at Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg as a stenographer, Georgie meet her future husband, John Murray, who was a patient there at the time. They were married September 23, 1948 in Winnipeg. Their son James was born October 19, 1949.After living in Winnipeg a short time they moved to Dunrea, near John’s family. Shortly after, they made their home in Souris. John passed away suddenly in 1956. Georgie remained in Souris and raised their young son, Jim until they moved to Summerland, British Columbia in 1966. She missed her Manitoba home and moved back to Brandon for a short time, then to Winnipeg until retiring when she made her home once again in Souris. She lived in the River Heights Apartments, then to the Victoria Park Lodge, which she loved. She often said it was the last place in the world overlooking the beautiful park. She had many wonderful times there, dressing up for Halloween parties, Christmas parties, and tea parties. Reluctantly, Georgie moved to the Personal Care Home on June 1, 2009. Her health was declining but she did enjoy her stay there and especially loved the staff, who still saw her fun, mischievous side. Being born and raised in Winnipeg she became an avid Blue Bombers football fan. She watched as many games as she could on TV. She would always get a call from her son immediately following a game, if they lost. Her son, Jim, her long time friend Lois Cram, who she met on the first day of grade one and whose friendship remained strong, survives Georgie. Her “card buddies” Ruth Brown, Ruth Jackson and Minnie Smith also mourn her passing. She will also be missed by her “adopted daughters”, Linda and Arva and their families, as well as many other friends she made over the years. A graveside service was held at the Brandon Cemetery, August 5, 2010, where her ashes were interred with her husband. Funeral arrangements were capably handled by Kowalchuk’s Funeral Home, Souris. In memory of Georgie, donations may be made to the Souris Hospital Palliative Care Fund c/o ARHA Box 10 Souris, Manitoba, R0K 2C0 or to a charity of your choice.
