MARTIN: L. T. “Molly”. It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great- great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend Molly, August 27, 2010 at Fairview Home, Brandon, Manitoba. Molly was born at Cobham, Surrey, England January 26, 1913, the second daughter of Edward and Rose Wills (Mead). She is survived by daughter Heather (Hendry) Smith of Rapid City, daughter Mavis (John) Stanford of Edmonton; son-in-law Bill (McGee) Smith of Rivers; 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister Rosemary (Bill) Smithers, sisters-in-law Kath Wells and May Martin all of England and Rose Martin of Teulon. Molly was predeceased by husband Cyril of 65 years, daughters Doreen Smith, Janet (Gordon) Smith and Angela Brooks, grandson Mark Comey. Molly was also predeceased by brothers Arthur (Kath) Wells, Fred Wells, sisters Nellie (Bertie) Whittaker, Kath (Harry) Williams; brother- in-law Frank Martin, sisters-in-law Joan (Ted) Ford and Muriel (Pat) Baker all of England, and brother-in-law Ian Martin of Teulon. Molly attended Church of England school until age 14, developing a love of poetry, gardening, nature and animals. She worked hard all her life. She married Cyril Jack Martin August 27, 1932 at Epsom. During the war, Molly was a Red Cross volunteer, running a first aid post out of her home and helping with children sent out of London. Molly and Cyril were friends with many Canadians during the war, including Jack Kemp. Jack was instrumental in persuading Cyril and Molly to come to Canada instead of New Zealand. The five Martins were welcomed to Jack, Alice and Gerald Kemp's home south of Basswood during a blizzard in the middle of the night on December 12, 1947. On April 3, 1948 they purchased the “Belcher” home in Rapid City. They lived there until 1966, with a three year absence, living in Dauphin from 1950-1953. Even after moving to Brandon in 1966 they spent summers in Rapid City. Mum loved life and was devoted to her family and church and will be greatly missed by all who know her. She had a “green thumb” and could grow anything showing her flowers in many local fairs. Many received flowers from Mum. Mum and Dad camped and traveled. She was a great cook and could bake anything from scratch. Her suppers and garden parties are well known. Mum loved nature, walking and hiking miles. She biked, swam, curled and bowled. She could make anything. Knitting was her specialty, socks, mitts and slippers for all people. She could act and recite. She loved to read to her grandchildren and seniors, reading at Central Park Lodge into her nineties. She was a smart dresser and even looked good when she only had one good dress. “Rest in peace Mum”A celebration of Molly’s life was held at St. Matthew’s Anglican Cathedral, Brandon on August 30, 2010. The Ven. Paul Curtis officiated and the Bishop, with The Right Rev. Jim Njegovan taking part. Interment took place at Rapid City Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons Raymond Smith, Bruce Smith, Michael Smith, Chad Brooks, David Smith, Philip Smith, Richard Smith and Keith Smith. Eulogy was given by Robert Smith. Donations in memory of Molly are to charity of choice. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.comArrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
