HUNT: Doris Mae Hunt (January 7, 1920 December 1, 2010). Doris Mae Hunt passed away peacefully at Fairview Nursing Home on Wednesday, December 1st. Born January 7th, 1920, youngest child of Thomas and Vanna Pue, sister to William and Fred Pue. Left to mourn are her son Richard and Karen Hunt of Brandon, three children Robert, Ryan (Jennifer), Kelly (Greg) Clark; daughter Judy and husband Arthur Huzzey of Abbotsford, B.C., their three children Julie, Jill, Steven; and daughter Patty and husband Grant Griffith of Brandon and their three children Courtney (Jon) Feldman, Jesse (Nadine) and Curtis (Laura). Mom was blessed with six great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Charlie Hunt in 1997 and daughter- in-law Beth Hunt in 2002. In 1940, Mom graduated from Brandon Normal School with a teaching certificate and began her teaching career at the Robert Burns School south of Alexander followed by the Gorrie School, south of Brandon. She met the love of her life, Charlie Hunt, playing tennis at the young peoples group of First Baptist Church, became engaged October 22nd, 1941 and was married April 6th, 1942. For 56 years, Mom and Dad enjoyed a rich and adventure filled life together. Following Dads death, Mom lived in Riverheights Terrace where she took great pleasure in the opportunity to meet new acquaintances and restore old friendships. Following a stroke in 2006, Mom moved to Fairview Nursing Home where she was treated with the utmost respect, care and dignity until her passing. Due to the war, Dad was stationed in Coal Harbour, B.C. in 1944 where Mom taught school for 18 months until Dad was posted overseas. At that time, Mom returned home to Brandon and taught school at King George School. In 1945, Dad returned home and was in the Sanatorium at Ninette for one year as he had contracted tuberculosis. While still teaching, Mom received her Master Barbers License, which allowed her to oversee the operations of Dads Barber Shop in the old bus depot at 11th and Princess. Mom continued to teach at King George until 1950, when their first child, Richard was born. Mom returned to teaching in 1968 and in1974 graduated from Brandon University with a Bachelor of Teaching certificate in Special Education and continued teaching Special Education at Brandon Collegiate Institute (BCI/New Era) until her retirement in 1980. Music was an important part of Moms life. She spent countless years as part of the First Baptist Church choir and up until she became ill in November of 2006, played the organ at her Church home, First Baptist Church every Sunday. She will be remembered for her favorite solo He Touched Me, which was favored by many and evident in the number of times she was asked to perform it. Moms life was enriched through the many adventures and journeys she and Dad had the good fortune to enjoy. Learning about people and different cultures was a passion of Moms and she never missed an opportunity, whether through reading, television or actually visiting a far off land to learn and embrace the people and their culture. Along with exploring every inch of the United States and Canada in their motor home, Mom and Dad enjoyed thirteen winters in Weslaco, Texas following their retirement. Mom treasured her family and friends, and kept connected with everyone when the opportunity arose. Through visits, calls, letters and being a gracious hostess whose home was open to everyone, our family life was enriched through staying so closely connected to so many friends and relatives. She will be sadly missed by the many cousins, nieces and nephews whom she truly loved and treasured. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the many who faithfully visited Mom, Dr. Egan for her care and compassion and the remarkable dedicated staff of Fairview Nursing Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 3881 Park Ave. Brandon, Manitoba, R7B 3Y6 or Fairview Foundation Fund, 1351-13th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 4S6.
