HOGELAND: Melvin (Mel) Munro Hogeland of Brandon, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on December 23, 2010 at the age of 85 years. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Irene; his daughters: Carole (Mike Bourgoin) of Frankford, Ontario, Donna (Peter Wesley) of Morley, Alberta, and Brenda (George Froese) of Rivers, Manitoba; his grandchildren: Amber Shiloff (Floyd Ormsbee), Tara Shiloff, Tyler Shiloff, Justin Froese, and Jordan Froese; and five great-grandchildren. Mel is also survived by his sister, Gretta Bromley, of Brandon; as well as numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents, Horace and Ida Hogeland, and a brother, Jack. Mel was born in Brandon, Manitoba on March 19, 1925. He received his schooling at Alexandra, Earl Oxford, Brandon Collegiate Institute (BCI), and at the Brandon Technical School. At age 18, Mel enlisted in the Canadian Army during World War II and trained with the Royal Canadian Artillery at Shilo. Shipped overseas, he was transferred to and proudly served with the Infantry unit of the 1st Batallion Black Watch Royal Highland Regiment of Canada. Discharged in 1946, Mel moved to Vancouver, British Columbia where he married Irene Turner on August 23, 1947. They returned to Brandon in 1948 and resided in Brandon and area ever since. Mel worked for 38 years with the Liquor Control Commission, retiring in 1986 as Assistant Manager of the retail store at Tenth Street and Victoria Avenue. He and Irene bought 40 acres north of the Brandon Airport, where they built a home that they moved to in 1987. From 1966 to the early 1990s, Mel was active with the raising of and caring for horses that daughter Brenda entered in various shows. Mel enjoyed being involved in his community and participating in various social activities. He was a loyal member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 58 years and served as 1st Vice-President of Branch #3. An avid curler for decades, Mel was one of the people responsible for the construction of the Legion Curling Club, and served a term as its President. He was also elected President of the Brandon Masters Curling Club. Through the years, Mel and Irene travelled across Canada and to many points in the United States. He took pleasure in spending time with family and friends. Mel's was a full and dedicated life, which has left countless precious memories. A Celebration of Mel's life was held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #3 on December 29, 2010, with interment at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Pastor Chris Arthur officiated.
