ARMSTRONG: David Pitt Armstrong of Sinclair passed away at the age of 90 at the Melita Health Centre on Saturday December 18, 2010 following a brief battle with cancer. He was born Jan 11, 1920 to Janet (Pitt) and John Armstrong on the family farm NW 22-6-29. Dave attended Crescent and Sinclair Schools. From May 1941 to February 1946 he served as a turner (machinist) in the Canadian Army in Canada and overseas. This time in the army during the war shaped his outlook on life. In 1947 Dave and his brother John formed a partnership, running a grain and beef cattle operation on the Armstrong family farm. Dave had a love of animals which began as a child and he took great pride in the care he gave the animals he raised. Dave was an avid baseball player in his youth and he continued to attend ball games in the area. He was interested in everyone in his community. He was active in the Royal Canadian Legion branches at Sinclair and Reston. In later years he curled at Reston and enjoyed travel to bonspiels. After Daves mother Janet died, Betty Thompson came to work and later live at the farm with her two sons. Dave always appreciated the care she took of him especially recently. David had reduced his work on the farm over the last few years but he continued to do some farm chores and be interested in farm decisions until he went into Melita Health Centre in October 2010 where he remained until his death. Dave is predeceased by his parents John and Janet (Pitt) Armstrong; brothers John and Norman; sister Grace Moore; brother-in-law Dick Moore. He is survived by his sister Jean of Winnipeg; nephews Neil Moore; Hugh Armstrong and children Chloe, Tessa, Simon and Olive; David (Linda) Armstrong and children Grace and Mia; nieces; Lois (Brian) Klaponski and son Adam; Elaine Armstrong and children Matthew and Zane McGrath; sister-in-law Harlaine Armstrong; special friends Betty and Ron Thompson; David Halls; Brian (Bonnie) and son Wyatt Ramsey. Dave will be missed by his family and friends. Cremation has taken place and interment will take place at a later date. Daves family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff at the Melita Health Centre for the fine care given to Dave while he was in the hospital. Thank you also to Gary and Brian of the Reston Ambulance Service. We would also like to thank everyone for visits, cards and flower arrangements sent to Dave while he was in the hospital as well as after his passing. We appreciate your thoughtfulness. Our family is grateful to Rev. Dwight Rutherford, the ushers Mel and Shirley Williamson, the organist Joyce Hawkins, the Reston and Pipestone United Church Choirs and Redpath Funeral Home for their contribution to Daves funeral. Thank you as well to the Reston United Church Guild and the Sinclair Lions Club for the delicious lunch they prepared and served after the service.
