McCALLUM: The death of Hanna Leona Sylvia McCallum (nee Askin), occurred at Brandon Regional Health Centre on Monday, January 17, 2011. Hanna grew up on the family farm south of Justice, Manitoba back in the days of the one room school house. She loved farm life and maintaining the family farm is her legacy. Hanna moved to Brandon as a young adult and was employed with the Singer Co. and became the first female Singer Sewing Machine Repair Person. While working in Brandon, she met Donald McCallum and they were married June 23, 1951. She worked alongside Don in his construction company and later in life returned to work the family farm they both loved. Hanna had many talents and her various jobs through life included; selling real-estate, surveying for research purposes, running the canteen and managing the Riverview Curling Club. Hanna enjoyed family and always made time to see the grandchildren and great grandchildren that she cherished. Hanna was an active community volunteer dedicating her free time to events and organizations that were near to her heart. Hanna was a Charter Member of Riverview Curling Club Inc., Charter Member of the Ladies Auxiliary Royal Canadian Legion #247, Honorary Life Member of the Riverview Curling Club Inc. and was an Honorary Life Member of the Riverview Ladies Curling Club. Hanna received numerous awards and honors for the volunteer work she did for the special events that were hosted in Brandon. The game of Curling was a passion. In her younger years, she curled in various leagues and then later in life Hanna travelled coast to coast, and to Scotland, to attend Curling events. She also travelled Mexico, Dominican Republic and within Canada visiting family. Hanna was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Sylvia Askin; and her husband, Donald McCallum. Hanna is survived by her son, Murray (Heather) and granddaughter, Kellie; son, Dennis (Betty) and grandsons, Jeffrey (Carolyn), Dustin (Raelene), Jayson (Tamara,) and families; daughter, Noreen; step grandsons, David (Tina) and Kevin Solomon and families; sister, Isabel Vermeersch; sisters- in-law, Joan Thompson and Isobel Hicks. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. The Ceremony to Celebrate Hanna's life was held at Memories Chapel, on Thursday, January 20, 2011. Rev. Chris Arthur officiated. Private family Interment will take place at a later date in the Sparling Cemetery. Hanna made one last trip to the Riverview Curling Club where family and friends gathered for a reception in her honor. Donations in memory of Hanna may be made to a charity of one's choice.
