HANSEN: Brenda Joyce Hansen (nee McKendry), beloved wife of Gordon, died suddenly while on a cruise ship in the Pacific on Friday, January 21, 2011. Brenda was born in Ottawa, Ontario on August 16, 1943 and grew up in the Winchester, Ontario area, the oldest of three children. At an early age, Brenda was involved in maintaining the family home as well as looking after her younger brothers. Although there was always work to be completed, Brenda also had opportunities to enjoy extracurricular activities such as singingin the church choir, dancing, and ice skating. She continued to work hard throughout her youth and teenage years, completing high school in the early 60s. She later completed a certificate in nursing in Ottawa, Ontario. Brenda moved to Manitoba in 1970, marrying Gordon on April 2, 1971. Together they lived on the Hansen family farm and in October 1972, Brenda and Gordon were blessed with the arrival of their daughter, Angela. A new home was built on the farm in 1974, and in January 1977, Brenda and Gordon celebrated the arrival of their son, James. Brenda was a devoted wife and quickly became an integral part of the farming operation. She learned various aspects of the farm, from driving equipment to completing the accounting bookwork. At the same time, Brenda took great pride in maintaining the home. An accomplished gardener, the yard was kept immaculate and showed Brenda's enjoyment of flowers, plants, and trees. Inside the home, Brenda was meticulous in its upkeep and was an exceptional cook. With respect to her children, Brenda was a dedicated mother, involving herself with their education. During the children's early school years, she volunteered at Westridge Preschool and Meadows School, and was available whenever needed. Brenda also ensured that her children had the opportunity to participate in various activities including sports and music. In her community of Roseland South Brandon, Brenda was an active volunteer - working at functions, preparing food, and serving on committees. She enjoyed the many friendships made throughout the years. The family expanded in 1996 when Angie married Lawrence Williamson. Brenda later became the proud "Grama" to Megan, Natalie, and Katelyn, all of whom held a special spot in her heart. In recent years, Brenda enjoyed travelling with Gord and the entire family, whether it was a short trip or an extended vacation to warmer weather down south. Brenda is survived by her husband of 39 years, Gordon, daughter Angie (Lawrence), son Jim, and grandchildren, Megan, Natalie, and Kate; brothers David (Diana) McKendry of Morrisburg, Ontario, Ken (Carmen) Martineau of Aylmer, Quebec, Roger Martineau and Ron McKendry of Metcalfe, Ontario; sisters Sue (Peter) Best of London, England, and Judy Martineau (Lynn Childs) of Ottawa, Ontario; brothers-in-law Stan (Gerry) Hansen of Souris, Manitoba, John Delang of Winnipeg, Manitoba; sister- in-law Elnora (Peter) Kardash of Calgary, Alberta; and numerous nieces and nephews.
