NIELSEN: Our Dad, Stanley William "Stan" Nielsen passed away on February 20, 2011 at Brandon General Hospital with his family by his side. A Celebration of Life was held at Rivers United Church on February 25th. Minister and friend Glenna Beauchamp officiated. His grandson Steven Kent was the urn bearer. Stanley William Nielsen was born in 1923 at Minnedosa. In 1944, he married Ila Shuttleworth who predeceased him in 2000. Dad and Mom began their life together and their family on a farm near Pettapiece. Dad worked for Brandon Packers and Harvath Construction until he and Lloyd Leech started their own construction company which continued for 25 years. Dad retired in 1985. Stan was a smooth dancer, whether he was square-dancing with mom or doing a slow dance with his daughters. He had almost infinite patience with his children. We remember our dad whose love of animals let us have many different pets like dogs, cats, skunks, cows, rabbits, turkeys and mice. Stan was a carpenter who helped build many houses in Rivers and the prankster who used to send unsuspecting people to the lumber yard to get a sky hook or a board stretcher. He was a fisherman who once caught a sea gull and spent a long time getting it un-caught! We remember the neighbor who was a regular at the coffee shop and the golfer who played his own particular version of golf called "Clousting the Balls". Dad just hung his golf clubs last summer after averaging 150 rounds. We remember our dad who passes his love of this game onto his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We honor and give thanks for the farmer, carpenter, fisherman, animal lover, dancer, guitar and banjo player, curler, golfer, athlete, coach, card player, story and joke teller. Stan was a man who loved family gatherings and was often accompanied by a dear friend Joan. The humorous ways they joked back and forth led to many more laughs around the table. We give thanks to: our father who taught us to always be there for others, to our grandpa, great-grandpa and great-great-grandpa who was always interested in our activities and who was always proud of our achievements. He will always be remembered by his children: Garry (Betty) Nielsen, Darlene (Terry) Berreth, Lois Turner, Patti (Jim) Kent, 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sister Joyce Campbell, brother-in-law Ed Shuttleworth and sister-in-law Mary Nielsen. Stan was also predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Christense, brother Vic, sisters Freda and Paula, daughter Betty, son-in-law John, great granddaughter Jessica. Memorial donations may be made to community charities or a charity of choice.
