GLASER: Lionel Travers Glaser, beloved husband of Valerie, of Brandon, MB, died peacefully at home on March 16, 2011. Lionel was born July 12, 1922 in Winnipeg, MB, the son of William (McCullough) Glaser and Selma Bernadina (Hallonquist) and younger brother to Raymond. Lionel began life with his family, in English River until he was two years old, then they moved to Whitewater, where he eventually started school. The family moved to Roland, MB when Lionel was 11 years old, where he grew up and finished high school. From 1939 until 1943, he attended United College in Winnipeg, but his education was interrupted when he volunteered for military service in Europe during W.W. 2, and was overseas from 1943 until Christmas, 1945. After the war, while still in uniform, he taught for awhile in Winnipeg in the old Ford Plant, then received his discharge. He completed his degree in Education in 1948, then taught high school, where he was Principal at Bethany, MB, then taught schools in Grandview, Stonewall, St. James and Winnipeg. He then taught for two years at Birtle Indian Residential School, then at King George School in Brandon. On July 1, 1958 he married Margaret Chapple in Winnipeg, then they moved to Brandon where Lionel was employed. Lionel attained his BSW, then his MSW, working for a few years as Social Worker, driving both north and south around the province and then obtained a lateral transfer from the Department of Education to Assiniboine Community College where he taught Social Work for the next 22 years, while Margaret taught school at BCI in Brandon, then at CFB Shilo, and then was employed at Brandon University as an Assistant Professor in Early Childhood Education, where she was instrumental in creating the Brandon University Pre School program. Margaret retired in 1985 and passed away in September 1990. On September 28, 2001, Lionel married Valerie (Hulbert), and became stepfather and grandfather to her four adult daughters and eleven grandchildren. Lionel was predeceased by his parents, William and Selma, his brother, Raymond and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He leaves to mourn his wife, Valerie, stepdaughters, Wendy (Martin) of Brandon, MB, Elaine (Tony) Gonzales, of Kelowna, BC, Angela (Dwain) Deal of Sundre, AB and Alison Howard, of Olds, AB, and grandchildren, Elizabeth and David Martin, Jessica, Alex and Morgan Gonzales, and Jeffrey, Andrew, Colette, Rebecca, Megan and Paul Deal and his sister-in-law, Ruth Glaser, of Bellingham, WA, nephew, Hugh Glaser (Mary Jane) and great-nephew Patrick Glaser, of Renton WA, and sister-in-law, Karen Hulbert, Brandon, MB, nephew Kevin Hulbert, Toronto, ON; and niece Lisa Hulbert, Brandon, MB, and many other aunts, uncles and cousins and his two best friends, Adin Bauman and Cesar Gonzales. Lionel took regular walks in summer, and in winter when it was mild enough, and faithfully watered the garden in summer and took great care of shoveling the snow in winter. He listened faithfully to Saturday Afternoon at the Opera on CBC Radio, and never missed the Winnipeg Symphony when it was in Brandon. A celebration of Lionels life was held in St. Matthews Cathedral, Brandon, where he had been a member of the choir for many years, with Dean Robin Walker and Bishop Jim Njegovan officiating, with music by Dr. Arthur Bower at the organ, and a large choir, with friends from St. Matthews and several of his former students and fellow teachers from A.C.C. in attendance. Interment will follow at a later date in the family plot in Minnedosa. Lionel will be deeply missed and fondly remembered in our hearts
