KIRK: Gladys Edna (Fleming) Kirk of Hamiota, Manitoba entered into rest at the Hamiota Birch Lodge Personal Care Home on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at almost 98 years of age after suffering a fall. She was born January 9, 1913 on NE 27-13-23 in the Hamiota municipality to Charles and Matilda (Till) Worden. She received her education in Hamiota and after completing her Grade 8 worked out as a hired girl as did most girls in that era. She married Ivan Fleming in 1932 and they raised 5 children as well as an adopted child, Francine. They obtained work in several communities finally purchasing a farm in the Oakner MB district in 1948. As well as being a homemaker, she did her share of outside chores and helped out with household expenses by selling eggs, milk and cream locally. For many years she drove the school van, was a nanny for Oakner school teachers, was janitor of Oakner school, and then after moving to Hamiota in 1966 she obtained work in the maintenance department at the Hamiota District Hospital. She was a Sunday School teacher, a church choir member, and she held offices in both the UCW and the Rebecca Lodge. She was very active in the weekly senior activities in Hamiota. In 1976 she married Wilmot Kirk of Hamiota and learned to play the guitar so she could play in the Senior Orchestra with him. Gladys will be remembered as being very much community minded and loved music and dancing. Above all she especially liked a visit from her grandchildren. She also enjoyed knitting, reading, baking, cards and games. She is survived by children Norah Gray, Shirley (Derek) Murray, Sheila (Mike) Paddon, Wayne (Lorae) Fleming, Wilma (Evan) Bell, Francine (Dave) Goodheart as well as step children Connie (Orrie) Steinburg, Doreen (Wayne) Angus, Larry (Betty) Kirk, Linda Van derVeen, Brian (Pat) Kirk, 33 grandchildren and 49 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents Charles and Matilda (Drake) Worden; husbands Ivan Fleming and Wilmot Kirk; brothers Russell, Lyle, and Gordon (Ethel) Worden; sisters Ida Worden, Nellie (Bill) Pollock, Edith (Bob) Watt, and Hazel (Ted) Bull. A memorial service will be held in the Hamiota United Church on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev Ralph Clarke and Barbara Rediker officiating. Interment of ashes will be a private burial in the Hamiota Cemetery. The family would like to express a sincere thank you to all those participating in the service to make it special, and enable us to follow through with Mother’s wishes.Special thanks to Reverend Ralph Clarke, Ushers Red McConnell and Rob Johnson, Music: Agnes Bridge and the Hamiota United Church Choir, Campbell’s Funeral Home, Hamiota UCW, and all those friends, neighbours, and relatives for their cards, phone calls, and many acts of kindness.
