COMBS: Herbert Henry Combs, age 93 passed away April 1, 2011 at the Deloraine Memorial Hospital. Herb was born December 31, 1917 on the home farm in Winchester Municipality. He attended Thirlstane School. In March 1942 Herb enlisted with the South Saskatchewan Regiment. Before leaving for Shilo, where he would be in training until he went overseas, he and Margaret McGee were married in Deloraine United Church. Following his return from overseas in 1945, Herb purchased the Charlie McDonald farm north of Deloraine. Herb farmed with his brother Lloyd and his nephews Murray and Clark. Herb and Margaret built a cabin at Lake Metigoshe where they spent several enjoyable summers with friends and family. Margaret suffered a lengthy illness and passed away July 9, 1976. Herb moved to Deloraine in 1980 where he resided until his passing. Herb was involved in many community efforts. He was a member of Deloraine Untied church and served on session. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge and was also a member of the Deloraine Lions Cub. He also served a term as councilor for the RM of Winchester. He was well known for the treats he made and gave away to all of his friends and family. We will all miss the annual birthday/New Year’s Eve party he held every year since he turned 65. Herb was predeceased by his wife Margaret (1976), father John (1976), mother Nellie (1986), brother-in-law Al McKenzie (2005), brother Lloyd (2006) and brother Ken (2007). He is survived by his sister Kathleen McKenzie of Winnipeg, niece Alana and nephews Don, Brian, Scott McKenzie and their families. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Isobel Combs, nephews Murray, Clark, John Combs and their families. Funeral service was held April 9 at the Smith Funeral Chapel, Rev. Alan Gairns officiated. Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Interment was at the Deloraine-Winchester Cemetery.
