APPLEBY: Norval Patrick (Pat), March 17, 1920 - December 6, 2010. Peacefully, with his family at his side, Norval Patrick (Pat) Appleby took his last breath on earth and first breath into eternity and went home to be with the Lord on December 6, 2010, at the Assiniboine Centre, Brandon, Manitoba. Norval endured several health problems the last year of his life but with his positive attitude and humour, he had the strength to face his dailyactivities with dignity and grace. Norval was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was born in Saint John, NB (Darling's Island) son of the late Walker and Mary Jane (Curran) Appleby. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Frances Josephine (Green), in 1992, 17 year old daughter Brenda Joyce (twin to Barbara) in 1967, Grandson Carl Anthony West in 1966, brothers George and Lawrence, sister Kathleen her husband Jack Bowes, brother-in-law Frederick and sister-in-law Doris Green. He is survived by wife Harriet (Roulette) Appleby of ten years, daughters Joan (Carl) West, Kelso WA., USA, Patricia (Delbert) Hastey, St. Stephen, NB., Barbara (Robert) Blake, Onanole, Manitoba, Coleen (Frederick) Fox, Calais, ME, USA, Marion (John) O'Ray, Dauphin, Manitoba, only son Norval John Appleby, Kelowna, B.C., step daughter Marie (Brian) Thompson, Brandon Manitoba, and 15 grandchildren, 8 step grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 12 step great grandchildren and 1 step great-great grandchild, several nieces, nephews, cousins, along with his brothers wives, Lillian and Mary Appleby, Sudbury, Ontario. Norval loved to travel and often commented on how he was so welcomed by family and friends from Canada's east-to-west coast and USA especially in his home Province of NB. Norval was a veteran of WWII and served as a stoker in the Canadian Navy from 1941-1945. At age 85, he returned to his Navy roots by being honoured at two reunions in B.C. and NS. These were in preparation for the Navy's Hundred Year Anniversary in 2010. Never shying away from career opportunities and being a self learner, his working career was both challenging and interesting. Norval mined for several years in ON, NB, Northern Que., and Harbour Side, Maine, U.S.A. Before leaving NB, he worked in sales for the Electrolux Company, sold cars and Singer sewing machines, and was also a woodsman and construction worker on the Mactaquac Dam in Fredericton, NB. In 1971, Norval moved to Cranberry Portage (Northern Manitoba), and worked for Northern Manpower, training men to operate saws and machinery in the lumberjack field. When that job was completed, he cooked for different oil companies in MB, SK, and AB. Norval always had the unique ability to instill in his coworkers confidence and pride of a job well done. Throughout his life, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, guiding, traveling, and watching boxing and hockey on TV. As a young man, he was an amateur boxer. Norval also had a love for opera and classical music. In his early fifties, Norval became very interested in natural remedies for living a healthy lifestyle. Whenever he had the opportunity, he would share his wisdom of these natural remedies to anybody who would listen and was frequently found at Hedley's Health Hut. Over the years, he found peace and fulfillment in reading and studying the Bible and had an intimate relationship with the Lord. Norval was very proud of his family and he loved to talk about them and their accomplishments. "Good-bye my family, my life has passed. I loved you all to the very last. Weep not for me but courage take, love for each other, for my sake. For those you love don't go away, they walk beside us every day." Norval's Memorial Service will begin with the interment at 1:00 p.m. - Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at Brandon Cemetery, 18th Street South followed by a "Celebration of his Life" Service at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Mike Davis officiating and luncheon to follow.
