DOW: Dr. George Edward Dow. Dec. 12, 1929-Aug. 18, 2011. It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of our much loved husband, father and grandfather, George Dow. Born and raised in Boissevain, Manitoba, George was the only child of Dorothy (Taylor) Dow and Edward Dow. He is survived by wife Ruth (Mackie), and children Anne Dow-Clarke (Stephen) and Edward (Marielle); grandchildren Meaghan Clarke, Abigail Clarke and Sophie Dow; sister-in-law Laura Cliffe; nieces Dawne Obleman (Bob), Sandra Marcus, and Karla Henderson; and great-nephew Rick Obleman (Carla) and their children Matt and Avery. Dad was predeceased by his parents, his sister in-law Grace Henderson, brothers-in-law Gordon Cliffe and Doug Henderson; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; too many friends to count – and his two very capable hunting dogs, both named Cappy. Dad spent his entire childhood in the town of Boissevain, Manitoba, graduating from Boissevain Collegiate in 1946. From there he attended the University of Manitoba graduating with degrees in Science (1950) and Medicine (1955). Following their marriage in 1955, Mom and Dad moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for one year where Dad studied family medicine before entering into medical practice in Killarney, Manitoba in 1956. Dad served as a physician in the town of Killarney and district for over 40 years, retiring in 1999. For much of his career he was part of a 2 or 3 doctor practice which meant that each doctor spent countless hours “on-call” for weekend and medical calls. In addition he served as a medical examiner for the region for many years. Throughout his time in Killarney Dad was very involved in local politics and numerous community organizations. He served on the building committees for the Tri-Lake Health Centre and the new Killarney United Church. He also found time to serve as a town councillor from 1977-1986, mayor from 1977-1986, and school trustee from 1987-1997. For his dedication and commitment to the community Dad was named “Physician of the Year” by the Manitoba Medical Association in 1990. He was also recognized by the College of Family Physicians of Canadawith a life membership, awarded in 1999. In July of this year he received his 60 year service award from the Masonic Lodge. Dad was a man with boundless energy and to say he was well-rounded would be an understatement. He had numerous hobbies: hunting, fishing, trapshooting, golf, curling, reading, stamp collecting, church choir and travelling. Most importantly Dad was a dedicated family man and a mentor to his children and grandchildren. He was also a world-class tease, never missing an opportunity to frustrate and bemuse those around him. A memorial service was held on Monday, August 22, 2011 at the Killarney United Church, officiated by Reverend Cole Grambo. Special thanks to the staff at Bayside Personal Care Home, Garth Nichol, the United Church ladies, and to all others who have helped in any way.
