MORRIS: Larry Donald Morris. It is with deep sadness that Larry’s family announces his passing on December 18, 2011 at the Souris District Hospital following a valiant battle with cancer. Larry was predeceased by his father, Don Morris in 2004. Left to mourn his passing is his mother, Ivy Morris, sister Lynne (Butch) Locke, and his three nieces and their families, Diana (Chet), Abigail and Gage Cameron; Sandy (Shawn) and Jace Hulm; Christa (Ryan), Layton and Jordyn Veitch. As well as aunts, uncles and numerous cousins. Larry was born on October 13, 1949 in Souris, Manitoba and lived on the farm south west of Souris. At the age of 6 years, in the fall of 1955, Larry attended the Saskatchewan School for the Deaf in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He came home every summer for two months, every Christmas and Easter via the train from North Brandon. During that time at home, he farmed with his dad and spent any spare time playing catch and batting out fly balls to his sister. While in school, Larry participated in all sports available. Hockey, football, soccer, baseball, curling, etc. He enjoyed them all and suffered a few broken bones as well. Up until 1965, the Manitoba School for the Deaf (MSD) was open only to residents of Winnipeg and then in 1965 the boundary status was changed to include all Manitobans. Finally Larry was able to come to MSD to attend school thus providing a long awaited opportunity for him to be closer to home. At the age of 18, Larry finished school in Winnipeg and moved home where he continued to farm until Don’s passing in 2004. Larry loved curling, pool, cribbage and golfing. He had such a great time and enjoyed his many friends and meeting new ones. A pretty good golfer we’ve been told! He proudly displayed his numerous plaques and trophies from various events. In 2003, Larry curled in the Manitoba Senior Deaf Curling Championships and their team went on to win the Canadians in Richmond, B.C. Quite an honor and privilege. In 2004 the Legion Cribbage Team he was a member of won the District Cribbage Event and went to the Canadian Championships in Nova Scotia to represent Manitoba. He had a wonderful time there and shared his stories with us when he got home. In 1982, Ivy, Don and Larry moved to Souris to reside but Don and Larry continued to commute back and forth to the farm. Even after Don’s passing, Larry would still go to the farm to check everything over, mow the grass weekly and would certainly notice if anything was out of place or had been moved! The farm was Larry’s place of solace. Before his passing we were able to take one last tour out to the farm where we’re sure that in his heart he said his good-byes. We’ll miss him forever. A private graveside service followed by interment will take place at the Souris and Glenwood Cemetery at a later date.
